Close-focus distance: Very very close, at just under 1 inch from the lens. The lens is capable of focusing inside the dome port.

The aperture range of a lens refers to the amount that the lens can open up or close down to let in more or less light, respectively.

The aperture range of a camera is very wide so that the camera can be used with a wide range of lenses. But if you've got a lens that has a maximum aperture of f/3.5 then that's the maximum aperture you're going to get.

Depth-of-field scale is marked between aperture range and distance scale on the lenses or just below the distance scale depending on the manufacturer. There are two sets of numbers on each side of the depth-of-field scale.

Compared to most fixed-lens compact cameras, the most commonly used and inexpensive SLR lenses offer a wider aperture range and larger maximum aperture (typically f/1.4 to f/1.8 for a 50 mm lens).

This article forgets to mention that most lenses are at their best in a middle aperture range, say f/4 to f/11. This is true of all lenses, even very expensive ones.

Fast speeds can be achieved by limiting the aperture range for the fast speeds to small and that of the slow speeds to larger apertures. But in most cases there are two diaphragms behind a camera lens or between its optical elements.

For example, you might have one lens that you know to work well across the entire aperture range, and another that's otherwise OK but starts to break down wide-open at maximum tele.

With close-ups, you won't need to go through the whole aperture range because the wider apertures will most certainly be overexposed so bracket your first shots from fl 1 to f22 to find the correct one for the tone of subject you are photographing.

The marked aperture range of this lens is f2.8 - 16. The focusing range of this lens is 1.6 to 4 inches. The MP-E 65 macro lens uses triple extension to focus (9.5 inches long at 5X).

Zoom lenses are specified with the focal length range followed by the aperture range, e.g., "24-105/2.8-4" is a lens that goes from a wide 24mm perspective to a telephoto 105mm perspective while the maximum aperture available goes from f/2.

The question I now have regards a site or info that explains things in detail that a lay person can understand. Like in camera specs one see something like "Aperture Range f 2.8-f4.

However, I prefer to use shutter-priority exposure mode with those speeds and let the camera take care of the aperture calculation - although you should watch that this does not exceed the lensaperture range.

Many photographers recommend shooting near f/8, for maximum lens sharpness, as this is roughly in the middle of the aperture range for most lenses.
