Apochromatic (APO lens)
Lens corrected for chromatic aberrations in all three primary colours. Many manufactures use different names (i.e. NIKON use ED) ...

APOCHROMATIC - often shortened to APO, means corrected for spherical and chromatic aberration. Lenses that are apochromatic cause all visible light wavelengths to focus on the film plane.

a process lens that has been corrected for both chromatic and spherical aberrations.

"Apochromatic" Elements
"APO" elements (UD, SUD, CaF2, LD, SLD, ED etc.) improve contrast and sharpness by reducing chromatic aberration (color defects) that usually occur in tele lenses.

Apochromatic
The inability to bring light of all colours to the same plane of focus is known as chromatic aberration.

-APO (Apochromatic) - the ability to bring all colors of the visible spectrum to a common plane of focus, within close tolerances. It usually refers to a lens with such superior color correction.

Apochromatic Lens - A specialty lens that focuses all light colors at the same point.

APO (Apochromatic)
Lenses that use internal elements to bring all colors of the visible spectrum to a common point of focus, creating a sharp image and minimizing chromatic aberrations, are referred to as APO lenses.

Most apochromatic ('APO') lenses do not have an Infrared index mark and do not need to be refocused for the infrared spectrum because they are already optically corrected into the near-infrared spectrum.

APO - Apochromatic Lens. APO lenses minimize color aberration. The Sigma APO lenses are made using special low-dispersion glass, which helps to compensate for color aberration, allowing for sharper images.

Achromatic / Apochromatic Doublets
Special lens systems (achromatic or apochromatic doublets) using two or more pieces of glass with different refractive indexes can reduce or eliminate this problem.

Apochromatic; a type of lens which focuses different wavelengths of light on the filmplane for improved image sharpness. Especially useful in telephoto lenses. (Chromatic aberration is corrected).

Lens designs which are projecting blue and green light focused unified are called achromatic lenses. When the focusing correction of the lens includes blue, green and red light it's an apochromatic lens design.

Chromatic aberrations are reduced if special lens systems such as achromatic or apochromatic doublets are used. These use two or more pieces of glass with different reflective characteristics. Not even these are completely perfect however.

Apochromatic lenses must be used for critical work in color copying and duplication.
