Techniques Glossary APS
Advanced Photo System, a camera and film system designed jointly by Kodak, Fuji, Nikon, Canon and Minolta.

APS Format Bonus
Probably the most attractive feature of an APS camera is that it offers the option of selecting the format of a picture when it's taken: classic, horizontal or panoramic.

APS-H is a cropped sensor size used in the Canon 1D series of cameras (not the 1Ds series). APS-H sized sensors are approximately 1.3 times smaller than a full-frame sensor or a 35mm film frame.

APS
The Advanced Photo System (APS) was devised by a group of five manufactures: Canon, Fuji, Kodak, Minolta and Nikon as a 'breakthrough in camera and film technology' and created a new generation of 'point-and-shoot' cameras.

APS Cameras
APS (Advanced Photo System) cameras and film are an alternative to traditional 35mm film cameras. They are perfect for the snapshot photographer who desires the smallest, lightest and easiest type of camera.

APS. Advanced Photo System. A film technology developed by Kodak that facilitates film loading. Users also get a card that shows all the frames, plus other advantages. Film size is smaller than 35mm.

APS-C (APSC)
A term used to describe the size of a digital camera sensor with a 1.5x magnification factor. The name is derived from the APS (Advanced Photo System) film format that was introduced in 1996 for the amateur point-and-shoot market.

APS
An abbreviation for Advanced Photo System. It is a film cartridge system that magnetically records all picture data for each frame of film.

APS camera or a normal 35mm camera? Many of you will know of the new type of film and cameras that were introduced a couple of years ago called Advanced Photo System (APS).

APS-sized (23×15mm)
4 million tiny pixels crammed into a 1/1.8 in. image sensor cannot compete in image quality with 4 million large pixels on an APS-sized image sensor.

APS - Advanced Photo System - will probably be the last film format ever invented. It was released in 1996 by Kodak and a consortium of major manufacturers, including Fuji, Agfa, Konica, Nikon, Canon, Minolta and Pentax.

24mm APS Cameras
The 24mm camera format was introduced a few years ago. The cassette holding APS film looks very similar to a 35mm cassette, but they are not compatible.

There are APS cameras that are point-and-shoot models as well as Single Lens Reflex systems. Professionals and industry experts agree that the APS cameras are a fine alternative to 35mm cameras.

Unlike 35mm, APS incorporates several convenience features. For example, you can choose from three print formats when taking the picture, normal, wide, or panoramic.

NIKON LOYAL TO APS DIGITAL CAMERA SENSORS:

24 megapixel APS CMOS sensor, same crop factor as NIkon D300s / Nikon D7000; 6000 pixels x 4000 pixels. This is a lot of megapixels, and it is not clear if most users will need this many megapixels.

Since the sensor of an APS-C camera is 23 x 15 mm in size, it only captures the center of the projected image from a lens which is designed to provide an image which will cover a 35 x 24 mm sensor (35 mm film).

You might remember the consumer APS film format of the mid-1990s. One of the big draws of APS for many consumers was the fact that you had three formats from which to choose when you made an exposure.

For example, consider a 35mm format (24mm x 36mm) compared with APS-C (14.9mm x 22.3mm). Both sensors have the same aspect ratio, 2:3. Now suppose you have a 50mm lens mounted to these two camera.

The Nikon D300s may have only been an HD movie feature upgrade from its D300 predecessor, but the D300s still holds the title as Nikon's most advanced APS-C DSLR.

The landscape shots above were taken with a Canon 30D digital SLR with an APS-C image sensor about 22mm wide.

The most commonly available miniature cameras use the APS, or Advanced Photo System. This is a cartridge film in a 16 x 24mm format.

Generally, APS cameras are more compact in size, weight and enbodied most of the latest and most advance technologies available.

In cameras using the APS-C sensor this factor is 1.5x or 1.6x. This means a 50mm lens will have focal length in 35 mm terms equal to 75mm with a 1.5x APS-C sensor and 80 mm with a 1.6x APS-C sensor.

Using a DSLR with an APS size sensor such as the Canon EOS 40D or Nikon D300 gives the benefit of a magnification factor, 1.6x with the Canon and 1.5x with the Nikon.

APS-C APS-C stands for Advanced Photo System-type C, which is an image sensor format that is equivalent to approximately the size of the Advanced Photo System negative (25.1x16.7mm). Find out more.

Can mean either the size of the camera or the size of the film or sensor. For camera, sizes there are APS, 35mm, medium and large format. For film format there is APS, 35mm, 645, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, 4x5, 5x7, 8x10, etc.

There is a lot of confusion about the nature of cameras with the APS-C sensor size vs. cameras with 35mm sensor size.

Using a standard angle zoom lens, such as either a 30mm prime for APS-C sensor cameras, or a 50mm prime for full-frame cameras, will assist in capturing images of lightning that fill the frame.

T Grain technology
The name for Kodaks film emulsion technology used in all Kodak APS films. Uniquely shaped grains that align better than conventional silver crystals absorb and transmitting light more effectively to produce sharper images.

Digital cameras having image sensors larger than APS-C size, and 35mm cameras, should not be used with these lenses. If such cameras are used, severe vignetting in the images may result.

The compact cameras is today, in year 2001, mainly split into three different categories, namely by their form of storing the pictures. The three varieties are APS, 35mm or digital.

Image sensors come in a variety of sizes with the smallest ones used in point and shoot cameras and the largest in professional SLRs. Consumer SLRs often use sensors having the same size as a frame of APS film.
