Artifact
An undesirable degradation of an electronic image. Usually occurs during the electronic capture, manipulation, or output of an image.

Archival - The ability of a material, including some printing papers and compact discs, to last for many years.

Be aware that very cheap DVD's have a shorter readable life span than low quality CDs If you intend to use DVD's for image storage I'd recommend doing some research on the archival qualities of the different brands of DVD.
