Many of us "archive" these in more or less the same way we archive our other photos. We take the picture, save it to disk or CD, and then forget about it. Our computers have become our virtual shoebox.
With a plan in place for digitizing their archives, photographers can begin scanning originals and seamlessly integrate them into their digital workflow.
I also burn copies to DVD that are to be stored at relatives houses and even the banks safety deposit box (which can be quite limiting due to size of the box in order to fit multiple DVD's in). The DVDs used are archive-quality for longevity.

Before any editing, first save your original scanned TIFF or RAW/DNG file, and preferably in more than one location. All subsequent editing should be saved in a separate file.

Once archived I use DigitalPro2 to catalog my images so that I know which DVD I need to grab from the shelf to get one back, but I don't go to the extra work of creating index prints or thumbnails on the DVDs, however that seems like a nice touch.
