Asymmetry

Asymmetry. Each eye is more capable of perceiving detail below our line of sight than above, and their peripheral vision is also much more sensitive in directions away from the nose than towards it.

Rule of asymmetry - A photo-composition rule that calls for objects of different shapes to be included in the frame, often with a sharp contrast between light and dark.

Asymmetry with a vast space above the subject matter
In general, place horizontal lines off center. However, the two photos, with the first symmetrical and the second asymmetrical, are great examples of an interesting photo and a boring photo.

Symmetry And Asymmetry In Web Design
Symmetry is beautiful. That's how most of us see it. Symmetry leads to a sense of harmony and pleasing aesthetics. Symmetry is also often associated with being formal and static and even a little boring.

Except for close-up and macro photography, the effect of lens asymmetry is minimal. At unity magnification, however, the errors from neglecting the pupil magnification can be significant. Consider a telephoto lens with P = 0.

The asymmetry of the picture (I hate to reduce to it to the Rule of Thirds, which drives me crazy!) is very effective too, I think, letting their gazes shoot across the frame.

As in the rule of thirds, the eye is naturally drawn to asymmetry, following the lines and curves to examine the scene. This can add interest to an otherwise simple image and can emphasize a particular feel in the subject.

This shows us whether there is any significant asymmetry, which is a good predictor for whether we have a 'good' or 'bad' copy. When we have a clearly problematic lens, we reject it and request a second copy for test.

If the underlying motivation for any composition is to engender dynamism (or at least to avoid lethargy), we can literally tune the level of energy by choosing our degree of asymmetry:
