Bracketing is a technique used to take a series of images of the same scene at a variety of different exposures that "bracket" the metered exposure (or manual exposure).

Auto bracketing
Using this mode, a series of shots - each adjusted to a different exposure value - is taken in succession. This is very useful in tricky lighting conditions where it is difficult to assess the settings.

Auto bracketing
A system that automatically makes a series of exposures at different exposure settings when the shutter is released, to increase the chances of obtaining a correctly exposed image.

Whilst 'auto bracketing' remains set (until I cancel it) the camera will cycle through the same three exposure settings so, if my 'drive' is set to single shot, I must remember to take three shots of each scene.

Auto bracketing (AB) takes a pre-selected number of photographs, one at the suggested exposure and one to either side, so you can be sure of one accurate result.

Auto Bracketing control: Metering feature that automatically produces three or four different exposures with one press of the shuttle release.

I've had images that were too dark because I forgot to reset my auto bracketing, and the camera gave me a dark shot just when I didn't need it.

We can set our camera to AV mode and use the Auto Bracketing feature most cameras have. Most Canons are limited to 3 exposures at the interval we choose (+ - 2EV Max).

Camera manufacturers are packing more innovative features into their digital models, such as video capture, voice annotation, and auto bracketing. What do these features do, and more importantly, do you need them?

In tricky light like this just the sun dipped below the horizon, choose a small aperture and the lowest ISO setting available so you can get the longest exposure possible. If your camera has auto bracketing, use it! ...
