When I first started using a digital SLR camera, one of the most frustrating problems I often came across, was when my DSLR lens wouldn't focus properly.

Most modern digital SLR cameras offer multiple zones of autofocus and lenses that are very efficient at snapping into focus. However, the shallow depth of field of super macro makes manual focus often the better solution.
Single autofocus (S-AF) focuses when the shutter button is pressed halfway. Once focus is achieved and locked, as long as the button is held halfway down, focus stays locked even if you recompose or the subject moves.

Autofocus or manual focus? Personally I don't think there is too much difference between the two, the trick is to be proficient with what you have, and it helps immensely to know automatically which way to turn focusing rings to get the right results.
- autofocus speed and accuracy (some very fast lenses focus slowly)
- VR performance (the manufacturer claims "3 stop" improvement, but what is it, really?)
- sharpness (some "fast" lenses are quite soft wide open, for example) ...

Used to prevent autofocus operation once the subject is in focus. This gives you more creative control by allowing you to focus, compose your image, and then capture the image.
Most autofocus systems do a good job of bringing the scene into focus, but they are not foolproof.

Single servo autofocus will only allow you to take a shot when it's in focus.

Hunting
An autofocus system that has trouble finding the focus in a low contrast image or in poor light 'hunts'; this is where the lens moves continuously from close-up to infinity looking for the correct point of focus .
Some of today's autofocus SLR cameras can focus fast enough that you don't even have to prefocus. Just follow the skier in your viewfinder and shoot at any time - the autofocus will get the picture no matter when you shoot. That's one possibility.
