An automatic camera will set the shutter speed all by itself, but there are times when it is still worthwhile to adjust it manually. Most obviously, there may be a time when you actually want an underexposed shot or an overexposed shot.
An automatic camera will do all the maths for you so, unless you are using manual exposure, you don't need to worry too much about the details.

The automatic methods should be used only for casual photography where speed is the primary concern and a reduction in quality is acceptable.

Most automatic exposure systems do a good job of exposing for stained glass windows. The primary consideration is to read only the window and not the dark interior surroundings. If the window is big enough to fill the frame, just compose and shoot.
