Flashguns with automatic exposure control are equipped with a flash sensor, either mounted within the flash head or in a separate optional unit fitted to the cameras accessory shoe.

It was a precision mechanical wonder that a handful of cameras were made which had automatic exposure control driven by a selenium meter, without need of further electronic or electromechanical support, for example the Optima.

This arrangement is used in some modern automatic exposure control cameras. But most between-the-lens shutters operate as described above. The best illustrations I know of are all in rather old books. Check for C.B.
