Automatic Focus. The lens on the camera focuses automatically when the shutter is half pressed. The viewfinder normally has focussing points shown to assist the user in knowing what will be in focus.
Automatic focus
A camera system that automatically brings the lens into sharp focus on the subject. Auto focus systems operate very quickly and reliably, and can usually focus more rapidly than the photographer can unaided.
Automatic focus isn't necessarily a bad thing either. It's actually quite acceptable if you're far away and using a telephoto lens.
The GH2 offers automatic focus during video recording but during our shooting we found that it is hard to get predictable results.
Automatic focus adjustment. There are basically two main AF methods: the focus detecting method, (or passive autofocus) usually employs a CCD and works by evaluating the amount of contrast or the phase difference in a scene.
Advanced models use automatic focus and have variable apertures. They all have light meters. They use electric motors to advance and rewind the film. They are much more versatile than the low-end models.
Most digital cameras have automatic focus and manual focus. Selecting automatic focus allows you to get quick action photos.
Optical-zoom lenses with automatic focus - Similar to the lens on a video camcorder, these have "wide" and "telephoto" options and automatic focus. The camera may or may not support manual focus.
Most cameras now have automatic focus (AF), some have manual focus override (MF) and some have a fixed focus (F) lens that ensures things from about 1.5 meters to infinity are relatively sharp.
Before you take the photograph, set your lens to automatic focus and focus on a far away object like the sky for example. You do this by pressing your shutter button half way down until you see a red dot flashing on the sky or far off object.
If you are photographing fast moving subjects, particularly when they are constantly changing their distance from you, you will likely have to use automatic focusing.

Even today's cheap point and shot cameras contain electronic automatic exposure and automatic focus circuitry, which clearly indicates a general trend in 35-mm cameras design: provision of maximum comfort in picture taking.

These are simple point-and-shoot models with manual film advance and a lens that can handle most normal situations. Most have film speed detection and an automatic flash unit, and some models have automatic focus capabilities.
