What is AV mode, f numbers and aperture settings?

AV
The Aperture value, usually refer to aperture settings.
Available light
The light that is present in a scene, either indoors or out, that is not added by the photographer. Also called ambient light or existing light.

-AV - see Audiovisual.
-Available light - term applying to light normally occurring in a scene, not supplemented by illumination intended specifically for photography.

Using AV and Auto Modes
If you're really lost on where to set all of your settings to start things off, try switching to auto mode and metering there.

AV:
The Aperture value, usually refer toaperture settings.

B (Bulb) Setting:
A shutter-speed setting on an adjustable camera that allows for time exposures.

DEP (AV, A) and A-DEP modes, basically do the same thing, in that they allow you to set an aperture so you can control the depth of field seen within a photograph.

I am a big fan of AV mode on my 40D its great if you dont have time to manualy adjust for exposure, you can quickly dial in the DOF then shoot. But to be honest if i had a subject that was still i would use manual exposure modes.

Aperture Priority Mode (A or AV)
This mode is really a semi-automatic (or semi-manual) mode where you choose the aperture and where your camera chooses the other settings (shutter speed, white balance, ISO etc) so as to ensure you have a well ...

If your camera has full manual mode, use it, otherwise with aperture priority mode (AV mode) if your camera supports it.
Most of the time you will set the camera to ISO 100. Don’t have AUTO ISO on. Read more about setting ISO.

Set the camera to ‘A’ or ‘AV’ - denoting Aperture Priority. In this preset you determine the camera aperture and the camera automatically sets the proper shutter speed.
Set the camera to ‘M’ - denoting Manual.

Are you printing it? Making a large display transparency for a trade show booth? Slides for an AV presentation? Transparencies for publications that still don't take disks? Little bitty images for a Web Site? Etc.

The Basic Zone Modes (icons) automatically choose the exposure settings for your selected scene. The Creative Zone Modes (P, TV, AV, M) can give you full or partial creative control over your exposure settings.
