Average Metering
An automatic exposure metering mode in the camera's TTL (Through-The-Lens) metering system that measures the entire scene and averages the exposures to give provide a uniform, neutral exposure value.

Average metering
A special exposure metering technique that measures the average light intensity across the entire frame.

Average Metering
Average metering takes all of the light values for a given scene - highlights, shadows, and mid-tones - and averages them together to establish a good overall exposure. Average metering is best used for front-lit subjects.

Center-Weighted Average Metering
Center-weighted average metering gives special emphasis to the center of the frame, but also covers the surrounding area.

Center-weighted Average Metering
Probably the most common metering method implemented in nearly every digital camera and the default for those digital cameras which don't offer metering mode selection.

The most basic is Centre-weighted (CW) or average metering that takes a measurement from most of the image area.

Metering Modes: You only had one choice before and that was centerweighted average metering which balances exposure by measuring light with attention given to the center.

In this case, using Weighted-Average metering, your camera might be 'deceived' by the abundance of light and expose for it by closing down the aperture and/or using a faster shuter speed (assuming ISO is constant), ...

The EOS 10D brought revised E-TTL algorithms which relied on centre-weighted average metering for E-TTL flash, even with the lens set to autofocus mode.

Although wide-angle average metering has largely given way to other metering sensitivity patterns (e.g., spot, center-weighted, and multi-segment), the values for K determined for wide-angle averaging meters have remained.

Camera metering can handle more weakly on a spot meter than, say, a center weighted average metering system. EV is commonly used in black & White photographic process.
