Averaging
a.k.a. matrix metering or segmented metering. This type of system takes a light reading from many different areas of the frame.

An averaging meter cannot distinguish between a subject of uniform luminance and one that consists of light and dark elements.

An averaging process used to estimate an unknown image value bracketed by two or more known image values. In image processing, interpolation is used to smooth the edge lines of images when the resolution of the image is changed.

Your exposure meter doesn't "see" a scene the same way you see it. Its view is much like yours would be if you were looking through a piece of frosted glass.

Smoothing
Averaging pixels with their neighbors. It reduces contrast and simulates an out-of-focus image.

Centre-weighted averaging metering is identified in midrange and pro EOS models by the [ ] symbol.

Center-weighted and averaging modes use a much simpler algorithm than multi-segment modes and most people won't use them very often.

An 18-percent gray card can be used for the integrated or averaging methods, a dark and a light card can be used for the scene brightness range method, a dark card for the darkest object method, and a light card for the brightest object method.

While it is true that for most of the year temperatures averaging -20F (-30F) at lower elevations freeze the landscape, during the short warm seasons, the tundra puts a display of color unlike anything I saw before.

Center-weighted metering is a type of "averaging" meter where the entire viewfinder image is metered but the reading area is "weighted" to give more emphasis to an area at the center of the frame.

Some cameras don't meter consistently between spot, averaging and center weighted. Use a gray card and fill the camera's viewfinder frame with the card. Use a normal or telephoto lens and slide film for this test.

What the camera shows instead is a composite histogram, averaging the values from the individual channels. In the case of the D100, this is weighted heavily on the green channel.

Now, how most meters come about rendering the scene middle grey is by averaging. That is, they will sample different parts of a scene and average the samples together to get a reading. This averaging works pretty well, in general.

The A12 50mm's autofocus speed is fairly quick and usually very accurate, averaging around 0.6 sec in bright light.

Lower digital ISOs allow more accurate averaging and less truncation of digital values, and hence lower noise and better image quality.

By default, the camera takes its light readings by averaging the light in the scene being presented to it. When you switch over to spot metering, the camera will only take the light reading from a single location you pick.

Perhaps the biggest problem with averaging is that moving objects aren't always rendered as continuous streaks - no matter how many photos are averaged.

I think Canon was very proud that the New F-1 was the world's first SLR with all of averaging, center-weighted and spot meter modes, but the only way you can select one or the other is to buy and install different focus screens.

By producing a number of images you can compensate for these errors by averaging them. Averaging is accomplished by adding the test results together and dividing the total by the amount of exposures.

Integration in photographic analysis is defined as the method of averaging all density ( illumination ) values either in R, G, and B, or as neutral density and saving this aggregate value to determine exposure in the camera or the darkroom.

It uses a lossy compression scheme by averaging the data in blocks of
8 x 8 pixels. Color variations that existed in the original image are lessened.
JPEG can achieve very high compression factors, the amount of which can be varied.

With longer exposures, the sensor is essentially averaging the detail of the changing water over the time that the shutter is open. If the shutter is open long enough, the detail will average out to a blur.

The other methods are 'averaging' and will look at the whole scene and produce an exposure recommendation based on all the values within it.

You may need to use exposure compensation, although I generally take an alternate meter reading off a middle-toned part of the sky ... not the brightest area, not the darkest. Another possibility is to go with an overall averaging reading, ...

The solution is to either compensate exposure and change the style of reading, such as using a center-weighted averaging pattern and locking exposure or using spot and adding +1 exposure compensation, as was used for this final shot.

At the same time, the shutter speed can affect whether or not the image is in focus, especially if the subject is moving. Faster shutter speeds are measured in fractions of one second-averaging 1/4000th of a second or higher.

Most of the time, it's going to be some average shade between the two colors. This fools the human eye--because we see that averaging as fuzziness. Raw digital photos often look just a little bit out of focus.
