The AVI files are actually pretty small - at the best quality setting (640x480 / 30fps) you're burning around a megabyte every second.

A few frames support common video formats such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Motion JPEG, AVI, 3GP (video phone format) and the audio formats MP3 and WMA. Some frames have limits on file sizes and none support any of the existing RAW formats.

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) developed by Microsoft, is a popular format for audio/video data on the computer but it is of relatively low quality.
Quicktime, created by Apple, is capable of storing video, audio and single photographs.

An iPad is quite versatile when it comes to how it easy it is to manage various image file types, including RAW files from a DSLR or JPG and AVI files from a compact camera.

Formats for movies are AVI, DV, MPEG, MOV (often containing motion JPEG), WMV, and ASF (basically the same as WMV).

While some multimedia players play multiple video types, different video formats are developed specifically for individual video software. Formats inlcude AAF, 3GP, GIF, ASF, AVCHD, AVI, DAT, DSH, FLV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, SWF, FLA, FLR, MKV, ...

One model we looked at has a clock, an alarm, a calendar, and plays MP3 files and will even let you view .txt files so it's kind of an e-book. It also allows you to play movies that are AVI files.

Some of the dozens of supported formats include: MP4, MOV, AIFF, 3GP, 3GP2, WAV, AU, AVI (basic codecs), JPEG, PICT, PNG, PSD, BMP, and TIFF. QuickTime video filters and effects are also available.
