AWB (automatic white balance) is the default setting and the one you should use most of the time. Daylight, shade, cloud, flash and tungsten are all fixed settings that you can use under the appropriate lighting conditions.

In the above example, the picture on the left is taken with the camera set to Auto WB. The indoor lighting is by two ordinary incandescent (tungsten) bulbs from the ceiling. It's not bad, but the fan should really be white.

The AWB system in the NEX-C3 is very reliable in a wide range of lighting environments. Metering and exposure are generally spot-on, capturing images with good contrast and minimal highlight clipping.

Shortcomings of Automatic White Balance (AWB)
The Automatic White Balance feature is a great all-around setting to use, but does trip up on certain scenes.

To be fair, many cameras have trouble with tungsten light sources in the AWB mode. But the results with AWB on the G1 were a bit worse than average.

You can rely on the auto white balance (AWB) setting in most shooting situations, but there are some occasions where it can't be relied upon.

The in camera white balance setting for this shot was AWB and final white balance for this image was achieved during RAW conversion in Capture One by selecting the gray card for white balance.

To find out how well your camera works in AWB mode, set your camera to AWB mode and take pictures under different lighting conditions. See if the results are okay. When they are okay, you can use the automatic white balance mode for those situations.

AUTO (also called AWB) mode works OK with flash and indoors and outdoors. Usually the images will still be fairly blue in shade and pleasantly warm indoors at night. When the flash is on most cameras automatically switch to flash white balance.

The AWB worked well in this shot. The focal point is his eyes. I like it. I like the title, too. Very accurate portrayal of the meaning of the shot. Overall, this is one of the best nature pictures I have seen on the site.

Our eyes are very good at judging what is white under different light sources, but digital cameras often have great difficulty with auto white balance (AWB) - and can create unsightly blue, orange, or even green color casts.

If you're more experienced using white balance, play around with it a little (experimenting with it will improve your experience anyway). Some people prefer incandescent while others are happy to rely on the automatic white balance (AWB).[1] ...
