Back-lighting

Back-lighting - light directed at the subject from behind the subject. This often causes the subject to be underexposed unless spot metering or exposure compensation is used.

 


Try to avoid back-lighting or "high-noon" overhead lighting, as the result may be an overly shadowed and dingy looking structureagainst a lifeless and rather bleached-out sky.

Although the beach was west-facing, I wanted to shoot with the dunes in the background, which meant that the sun, rising in the east, would be back-lighting Mattie which, for me, was ideal.

A flash supplies additional light to compensate for low lighting, back-lighting and other lighting issues.

A card containing chips that store images.

If it's not perfect, you can easily come back when it's better. In the next photo you can see how NYI student Wayne Angeloty was able to get exactly the back-lighting he wanted, producing bright furry outlines for these two "conversing" monkeys.
