Back lighting is where the source of light is further from the camera than the subject. If the light source is the sun, then your subject has his, her or its back to the sun. The sun doesn't have to be in the picture but you would be facing it.
Back lighting falls on your subject from behind it. You're shooting into the sun, so exposure can be tricky, and you need to watch for lens flare, but the resulting image, usually silhouetted or with rim light, is often striking.
Back light pictures show very high contrast. You must choose between two different exposure possibilities. If you decide to properly expose the bright picture parts, the shadow parts become mostly black silhouettes.
A back light or rim light can be positioned behind the subject and facing toward the camera to illuminate the edges from behind so they glow and are visually separated from the darker background.
