Back Lit - The subject is heavily lit from behind which generally causes it to be underexposed unless you use critical spot metering.

Figure 12 shows an image with a mountain ridge back lit by the sky. The problem with this image is that the edge where the mountain ridge meets the sky is very high contrast. This will likely result in an oversharpened ridge.

Fill flash is for when your subject is back lit and you need to fill in the shadows.
This pair of photos shows the dramatic impact a fill card can have. In the top photo the car is back lit so the front is in shadow. In the bottom photo a fill card is used to bounce lite back to illuminate the near side.
These effects are caused when you shoot a subject that is strongly back lit. All lenses can have this problem...but cheap lenses (or cameras with built in lenses) can increase the affect Halation and Chromatic Aberration. Read more about lenses.
The key is to make sure the lighting is exactly the same in both the cloud and landscape images. You don't want to combine back lit clouds with a side lit horizon. Common sense goes a long way here.
I usually use the overexposure more then underexposure since I am trying to bring out faces in bright back lit conditions, or reveal details in shadows. Underexposing will bring out details in bright objects and won't wash out the details.
The solution came in the form of using flash as it allowed me to add light to the back lit side while simultaneously picking up some of the sunset colors in the sky.
A single Quantum light is more effective than two Nikon or two Canon strobes and much easier to manage. When shooting groups in full sun the Quantum puts out enough power for excellent fill lighting even with 30 people back lit by the sun.
