BALL HEADS vs. PAN HEADS: Equally as important as a good tripod is a good ball head or pan and tilt head. Each style has pluses and minuses and I encourage you to try both to see what fits your needs.

Ball Head
With out a ball head on a tripod or monopod, the camera must be mounted directly to the top of the 'pod and can only shoot in one position.

Ball Head Edit
A ball head is a tripod head based around a ball. Loosening a tension knob usually allows the photographer to position the camera anywhere they want. Tightening the same knob locks the camera's position.

Ball Heads
Because of the size, weight, and complexity of 3-way heads, many photographers prefer a ball head. Not only are ball heads lighter and smaller, they are faster to use.

Ball Head - Small still camera - There are ball heads with a friction adjustment and a 'locked/unlocked' type. Pan heads have one or two knobs to adjust.

Ball Head - A special, sphere-shaped mount on a tri-pod that permits a wide variety of camera angle adjustments.

Barn Doors - Flaps mounted on accessory lights to help control and direct illumination.

Ball heads are fast to set up and they provide great flexibility in positioning the camera. A ball head can also work nicely for macro photos and product photography.

Use a ball head mounted on the tripod to allow fast camera movements. If you need to switch from landscape to portrait format, you’ll be able to tilt the camera quickly and easily.

Most good ball heads are lined with self-lubricating Delrin composite or similar material and should provide years of trouble free, smooth operation. Eventually though, you may find that yours don't move quite as smoothly as it did when new.
