Battery drain with long exposures.
Most EOS cameras require battery power to keep the shutter open. This is obviously a problem for astrophotography, a field in which very long (many hours) exposures are quite common.

Lithium Battery
The D2H uses Lithium re-chargeable batteries and appears to have a true battery meter. That's one huge headache finally gone!

- Battery Life is important because it would be very disappointing to have an empty battery in just few shots. So better get extra accessories such as rechargeable batteries and the battery charger.

Your battery life will depend largely on how you use your camera. Leaving your camera on between shots, using the flash, and reviewing your photos on the in-camera display at full brightness can all diminish battery life by varying degrees.

Will Battery grip help?
I find that when using a long lens, I hold the camera in my right hand and push down gently while supporting the lens with my left hand and pushing UP gently. Gives nice addes support.

Nikon Battery Charger, a Trusted Camera Companion

Recently produced rechargeable batteries often come ready-to-use that they don't need to be recharged prior to use.

Remove battery, film, lens and sync cord. Leave all ports open.
Open camera back.
Use small Phillips head screwdriver to remove four screws on inspection plate over the electronics module.

An extra battery for your camera (and flashgun) is also advisable. Locking the shutter open eats up batteries, plus long exposures make for extended write times as the image is transferred from the buffer to the card.

Motor Drive
A battery-powered mechanism that advances the film to the next frame and recocks the shutter. Popular for action-sequence photography and for recording images by remote control.

Check battery power to make sure you have sufficient power and carry spare batteries.
Next, set the camera to either aperture priority or manual mode for full control. Never use any Program modes for serious photography.

Years ago, I made my own battery packs from motorcycle batteries, being careful to match voltages as closely as possible. I never blew out a flash, but it sometimes made me nervous about what was in my pocket.

It's like a cell phone or a power tool or anything else that has its own battery - you usually have a charger that the battery goes into for a while to charge, while the charger is plugged into a wall power socket.

Here a are a couple common areas to keep in mind: Batteries Always have a brand new spare battery. If your battery goes dead, most cameras are no longer functional (with the exception of purely mechanical cameras, a rare breed these days).
