The D700 is compatible with the D300's new battery pack / vertical grip, the MB-D10.

Also called power pack. Rechargeable battery protected by casing. It provides camera, external flash, etc, with additional power.
Battery Packs
External battery packs for speedlight flashes yield faster recycling time and more photographs between battery changes. The disadvantages are their extra weight, awkwardness of use, slow charging time, and high price.
Battery packs containing large rechargeable batteries let you extend your shooting time. These units, small enough to attach to your belt, connect to the flash by cable.

Most of Canon's high-end flash units have sockets on the side which can accommodate external high-voltage (270 volts) battery packs.
Nikon SD-8a battery packs for 2 flashes when using dual flash. Alternatively I have a Digital Camera Battery, but the SD-8a is a cheaper and lighter solution if all you need is flash support.
Years ago, I made my own battery packs from motorcycle batteries, being careful to match voltages as closely as possible. I never blew out a flash, but it sometimes made me nervous about what was in my pocket.
The strobe I usually use is a White Lightning Ultra 1600, powered by a Vagabond battery pack. If I have to do a bit more walking, I use two Canon Speedlites stacked together with a thick rubber band.
Digital cameras use either a rechargeable battery pack or traditional batteries, and some come with an AC adapter as well. Consider buying an extra battery pack or investing in rechargeable AAs, and always have extra on hand.
S10 uses a rechargeable, nickel-hydride NB-5H battery pack or a 2CR5 lithium battery.
In the US the PowerShot S10 is sold in without the NiMH battery and charger, however in Canada the S10 is sold with all (as a kit) ...
Some digicams are packaged with a lithium-ion re-chargeable battery pack. Lithium ION batteries are lighter but are more costly than Ni-MH or Ni-Cd (NiCad) rechargeables.

Lithium ion batteries
Some of the newer digital cameras are now coming with a lithium rechargeable battery pack. Lithium batteries are lighter and more costly than NiMH or NiCd type of rechargeable cells and can be rapidly charted.
Powered by Elinchrom battery packs, the Ranger A heads have a minimum flash duration of just 1/5120 sec. Had Markewitz used heads with more common, slower flash durations, we would see faint but visible motion blur.
Strobes are larger & heavier than S&S and Inon, and take a proprierary battery pack. People with Ikelite housings usually get Ikelite strobes so they can use the Ikelite TTL converter.

An old Nikon SB105 with alkaline batteries will crap out long before that 8GB card is filled, but an Ikelite DS125 equipped with the new NiMH battery pack will power through and keep recycling quickly.
Flash on camera-what is more basic in photography! This shot was taken some years ago-and I am still using Sunpaks today (now with the TR 2000 battery pack-very cool). Again-a standard lens; and the eyes are placed in the top third of the frame.
- AA Battery: Using AA batteries is often most convenient for on-the-go digital camera users as it eliminates the need to charge battery packs, allowing for lots of picture-taking and the ease of battery replacement.
When using a flash and a large number of photographs are to be taken, you may need an extra battery pack. Always be prepared and attempt to overcome the unexpected.
