Bayer pattern
The "Bayer" pattern is digital photography terminology to describe how photosites are arranged on an image sensor. A Bayer pattern has 50% green photosites, 25% red photosites and 25% blue photosites.

Bayer Pattern - Filter Array with most common colors of the three most popular colors: Red Green and Blue. Filters of the above colors can be applied on selected part of an image to calculate the true color of all pixels in this area.

Also know as a Bayer Filter, is a mosaic color filter array (CFA) that is in wide use on most digital camera sensors.

The GRGB Bayer Pattern is the most common CFA used, it was used by Kodak on the DCS series cameras and is used in most consumer digital cameras (except for Canon up until the S100 who used a CYGM CFA).

*COLOR RANGE ISSUES BETWEEN SCANNERS AND BAYER PATTERN DSLR SENSORS: This is an area that is argued frequently when it comes to the digital camera vs film scanner image quality debate.

Larger chromatic variances may result from Bayer pattern demosaicing. Digital sensors typically capture photons with a repeating array of two green, one red and one blue photosite(s) that register separate luminance values for each site.

To create colored image, a color filter is required. It is a colored pattern lay down on the sensor pixels, this filter pixels are arranged in a G-R-G-B Bayer pattern, with each pixel capturing a different color.

[2] Other companies specialise in making camera sensors, among them Omnivision and Dalsa. Dalsa already offers a low-noise still camera CCD with 33 megapixels, still based on the above-mentioned Bayer pattern.
