Techniques Glossary Bitmap
A digital image formed by a grid of pixels. The computer assigns a value to each pixel - ranging from 1 bit of information black or white) to as much as 42-bits per pixel.

Bitmap
Bitmap is a type of digital image file format that enables maximum color depth and stores image pixel information bit by bit.

Bitmap image - Images created or captured as a grid of colored dots called pixels. Because a bitmap image - also known as a raster image - contains a finite number of pixels, the way a bitmap image looks is affected by its resolution.

Bitmap:
The method of storing information that maps an image pixel, bit by bit. Examples of bitmapped file formats are: .bmp, .pcx, .pict, .pict-2, tiff, .tif, .gif (89a), and so forth. In fact, most image files are bit mapped.

Bitmap(BMP)
An image made up of dots, or pixels. Refers to the raw format of a raster image, in which the image consists of rows or pixels rather than vector coordinates.

Bitmap - An image represented as pixels in a row and column format. (Note that Adobe refers to a bitmap as a two-color image.

Bitmap - The method of storing information that maps an image pixel, bit by bit. There are many bitmapped file formats, .bmp, .pcx, .pict, tiff, .tif, .gif, and so on. Most image files are bit mapped.

Bitmap
Bitmap images consist of small squares (known as pixels) to represent images. Bitmap images are the most common electronic medium for photographic images.

BITMAP - A bitmap is a picture that is an arrangement of tiny squares of different colors, called pixels. For the file extension, ".bmp," see .BMP below.

bitmap data
The portion of a bitmap file containing information associated with the actual image.

Bitmap
A digital image created from rows and columns of dots called pixels, the more bits associated with each pixel, the higher the bit depth.

Bitmap. The method of storing information that actually maps an image pixel bit by bit. Formats include; .bmp, .pcx, .pict, .tif, .tiff, .gif. Most picture files are bit-mapped.

Bitmap or 'raster'. The form in which digital photographs are stored, made up of a matrix of pixels.

Bitmap
A pixel-by-pixel representation of an image where each bit is mapped to a corresponding pixel or dot. Also commonly referred to as a raster image because the pixels are laid out in a rectangular grid or array.

Bitmap
A method of storing digital information by mapping out an image bit by bit. The density of the pixels determines how sharp the image resolution will be. Most image files are bit mapped.

Bitmap
This data-storage method records one bit at a time of a picture's pixels. A bit-mapped image is typically of one of the following formats

An array of binary data representing a pixel by pixel (bit-mapped) image or display.

BitMapped image file format.
Bracketing
A series (typically 3-5) of photos taken at specific amounts over or under the "correct" exposure, to ensure getting at least one "right". Can be expensive with film, nil cost in digital.

bitmap - A data file or structure which corresponds bit for bit with an image displayed on a screen, probably in the same format as it would be stored in the display's video memory or maybe as a device independent bitmap.

bitmap an image formed by a matrix of visible or invisible dots
text information presented in the form of readable characters
font a collection of letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and other typographical symbols with a consistent appearance ...

BMP
(Windows Bitmap) This common file format is used to describe graphic files that are essentially not compressed. Wallpaper images used on a Windows opening screen are most often BMP files.

A 'bitmapped' image contains information for placement of each and every pixel in the image. JPEG, GIF, TIFF and BMP are probably the most common type bitmapped digital image. JPEG, GIF and TIFF are readable in both PC and Mac format computers.

There are two basic forms of computer graphics: bitmaps and vector graphics. The ones we will concentrate on here are bitmap formats because they are the ones used in digital photography.

TIFF is a flexible bitmap image format supported by virtually all paint, image-editing, and page-layout applications. Also, virtually all desktop scanners can produce TIFF images. This format of file uses the .tif extension.

The HTML5 standard introduces the element, a resolution dependent bitmap canvas on which 2D graphic objects can be rendered. With JavaScript one can draw shapes like circles, rectangles and lines on this element.

Raster images are made from bitmap rather than vector grids. Rasterisation is the process of converting mathematical and digital data into dots by an output device.

A standard image file format for bitmapped graphics. TIFF files are uncompressed and, therefore, very large compared to compressed formats.

BMP, also called Windows bitmap, is a format specific to the Windows operating system. It can be used in various Window-based applications but its great disadvantage is the large file size, since it doesn't use any compression.

The two most common methods for describing graphics on a computer are bitmaps and vectors. A bitmap is a way of describing the color of each point in a picture. This is great for photo-realistic or rendered images.

Many file formats use compression to reduce the file size of bitmap images (digital photo). Lossless techniques compress the file without removing image detail or colour information; lossy techniques remove detail.

It applies a linear curve to the image mapping all brightness levels into the bitmap image space.
The Window is very intuitive. You can simply hover with your mouse over any of the sliders to get a short explanation.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is an extremely flexible bitmap format used to exchange files between applications and different computer platforms. It is supported by virtually all kind of software programs and devices.

Raw files require additional processing by a raw converter in a wide-gamut colorspace before conversion to format where they are ready to be used with a bitmap image editor or printed.

Graphic Interchange Format, a bitmap file format widely used on the Web. It has a limited colour palette (256 colours) which makes it more suited to graphics rather than photographs. It can also be used for limited animation.

In computing, an image composed of pixels is known as a bitmapped image or a raster image. The word raster originates from halftone printing technology, and has been widely used to describe television scanning patterns.

Graphics filters, common in bitmap editor programs, are the most common way to use pixelization.
