Black and white was what first got me "seriously" into photography. While I never attained real mastery in black and white printing, I have spent a long time in various darkrooms.

Black and white photography is a beautiful medium and an artform practised by some of the world's greatest photographers. But newcomers to black and white photography, however much they enjoy it, may miss one thing - colour.

Black and white photography can be a hard task because your subject is the most important in these photos. With practice you can get the hang of understanding the lighting, the subject and how you want to compose your final image.

Black and white typography may be the oldest type in existence, but it's far from boring and out-dated. In fact, it holds its own against color typography even now.

Black and white suited the nature of this project for David. It defines the era in which many of the photographers he has captured first made their names, and for him, it is where photography started.

Black and White conversion is usually done well through the color channels panel. Pick either Red, Green, or Blue. (Certain colors are good for certain things. . .skies can look good in the red channel).

While fine black and white landscape photography is quite possible with digital technology, just like with shooting film it takes significant manipulation of the original image to make a good black and white print or digital file.

Black and white digital photography is a perfect opportunity to learn how important perspective is to all photography. Don't just move your subject (or object) and light source to different positions and relationships, but also move the camera.

What is the true essence of black and white art and photography, and can it offer more?

Black and white images (only black and white, one bit per pixel) or
Other formats, such as GIF, PNG or JBIG, are far better for these kinds of images.

The Black and White image had a cyan cast that was stronger than the reference Kodak print, but not serious (as strong as EZPrints, but more green). The Auto Exposure test images came back perfect.

The black and white smudges to the right of the pictures are the layer masks. The black parts of the layer masks are transparent, gray bits semi-transparent and the white bits are opaque. So you can see which bits of each photo I have selected.
