BLOCKING OUT A BACKGROUND It is a simple matter to eliminate or block out an unwanted background in product photography. The technique involves two negatives. Two separate pictures are made of the product setup.

Blocking
Setting actor and camera positions and move-ments which are intimately related to lighting.
Blooming
The spreading of strong Highlights into surrounding areas of the image.

blocking
an undesired adhesion between layers of material placed in contact under moderate pressure and/or temperature in storage or use, usually occurs in a stack of printed material that is stacked prior to thorough drying.

-Blocking out - method of painting selected areas of a negative with an opaque liquid on the non-emulsion side. Since light is unable to penetrate these areas they appear white on the final print.

Blocking An object that partially obscures another in the frame is clearly closer to the viewer than the object being blocked. This is clearly true regardless of the size of the objects involved.

Plus/Minus Icon for Exposure Compensation: Getting the proper exposure is important to prevent blowing out the highlights or blocking up the shadows.

Cameras have various methods of blocking the light from reaching the film or CCD. When a picture is taken this barrier, known as a shutter, will open and allow light to reach the film or CCD.

A UV transmitting, visible light blocking filter is placed on the lens, that allows ultraviolet to pass and absorbs all visible light. Examples of these filters are Kodak Wratten 18A, B+W 403, and Hoya U-340.

Before we begin, you will need to check to see if your camera has an infrared blocking filter (also called a "hot mirror" filter) installed. A quick way to test this is to see if your camera can see beams emitted from a common infrared remote control.

Otherwise, besides a few creative options that I tried in the past, such as blocking all the light from the sky in your car with tarps, or working in a sleeping bag, your best option is to use a changing tent.
