Blown out highlights in fashion photography, underexposed dark alleys, blurry drive by shootings, grossly distorted wide angle landscapes are often enhancing the picture, but we are too afraid to try it.
There are other LCD viewing modes that you can use along with the histogram graph, such as the blinky blinky mode for blown out highlights, which most digital cameras have today.
Because of this, fall foliage can often wind up as blown out highlights. Try underexposing about a 1/2 stop. This will not only help prevent overexposing the leaves but will help intensify the colors as well.

This photo's white balance needs to be adjusted and the blown out highlights need to be recovered. I also adjusted the saturation just to mute the overall picture.
The blown out highlights in two of the shots demonstrate the S30's intolerance for over exposure. Some of the higher end digital cameras may handle this better. Negative film would likely have held more detail in those areas.
These are the tools I enjoy using the most because they allow you to correct exposure errors, pull out shadow detail and fix slightly blown out highlights with just a few clicks.
Since we readily accept some dark shadows in nature, you can feel free to clip the shadows to some degree if it improves the appearance of your image, but blown out highlights are rarely a good thing.
