Every digital image is a bitmap (BMP) or matrix of adjacent pixels. If you would enlarge a small area of a bit-mapped image you would clearly be able to see the pixels it is made up of.

BMP, also called Windows bitmap, is a format specific to the Windows operating system. It can be used in various Window-based applications but its great disadvantage is the large file size, since it doesn't use any compression.
