Brownie was the name of a long-running and extremely popular series of simple and inexpensive cameras made by Kodak. The Brownie popularized low-cost photography and introduced the concept of the snapshot.

My first camera was a Kodak Holiday Brownie that my grandfather bought for me in 1955. I took photos of everything imaginable, and I still have many of the photos and negatives today.

BROWNIE - Brand name of Kodak's first consumer box cameras.
B.S. - B.S. refers to the British Standard for film speed measurement. BSI refers to the British Standards Institute which determined the B.S. system.

-Brownie - trade name given to early Kodak box cameras.
-Brush development - method of development in which developer is applied to the material with a brush or similar instrument.
-BSI - abbreviation for British Standards Institute.

Since the days of the Kodak Brownie cameras, manufacturers have tried to automate everything for us. Hence, today's digital cameras also all sport an Auto White Balance (AWB) function. Depending on the camera brand, some AWB works better than others.

To be honest, one of the very first cameras that was sold in volume, the Kodak Brownie, was a compact camera. The real distinction for the compact cameras didn't begin until 1936, when Germany's E.H.G introduced the world's first 35mm SLR.

I took my vintage 1924 Brownie camera completely apart to see how it worked, researched and found the out-of-production film, took some photos and found someone to process them.

I learned photography back in the film days. Got my first camera at age 6 (Kodak Brownie). Started developing and printing my own sometime in my teen years. I had a darkroom right off my bedroom (was a kitchen when that space was an apartment).

Most have minimal viewfinders, fixed exposure and fixed focus. The current most basic of this type is the single-use cameras, which are the same idea as the original consumer camera, the Kodak Brownie.

Now people could buy this camera and use it, while the developing of the photographs was left for the chosen experts. In 1901, photography was available to the masses with the launch of the Kodak Brownie.
