A shutter setting marked B at which the shutter remains open as long as the shutter release is held down. This is used for time exposures that are longer than your camera's preset shutter speeds.

"Bulb" (Long Exposure) Photography Tips
Now days many digital cameras have a mode on them called 'bulb' mode that allows you as the photographer to keep the shutter open as long as you wish.

What is bulb (B) mode?
Camera shutter times are normally specified in fractions of a second. Taking pictures on a sunny day, for example, can easily mean extremely brief exposures of 1/60 to 1/1000 of a second.

Bulb
This setting is available on some cameras which allow manual control of the aperture and shutter speed to set a long exposure for night time photography and other subjects.

Bulb (shutter speed)
When set to the Bulb setting, the shutter remains open as long as the shutter release button is depressed. This allows for real night photography, and is ideal for taking multiple bursts of fireworks on one frame.

Later bulb designs incorporated plastic coatings, to try to prevent bulb bursts - or at least contain the broken glass. These coatings were usually coloured blue - to give a colour temperature closer to daylight for use with colour film.

If you have a B (Bulb) shutter speed setting you can use it to control exactly how long your shutter is open. This is always my choice. The trick is to open the shutter right at the beginning of the burst and close it when it reaches its peak.

The only tools you will need are, a lintfree cloth (or failing this, a repeatedly washed T-shirt or handkerchief), a sable artist's brush and a rubber squeeze bulb.

The modeling lamp for the StarFlash® is a 250watt halogen bulb and has three settings to assist you as you develop your shots: Off, I, and II.

Two types of flash are available, Bulb and Electronic. Early underwater photographers had only bulb flash and although these may occasionally still be used these have largely been superseded by electronic flash.

Some cameras also give you the option to shoot in ‘B' (or ‘Bulb') mode. Bulb mode lets you keep the shutter open for as long as you hold it down.

The color chart series below was shot with my Canon 1Ds Mark II with a single incandescent light bulb in a white reflector. This was a standard grocery store 75 watt 'soft light' bulb. In camera white balance was set to incandescent.

It was at this point that the allegorical light bulb went on over my head and realized I could use a toothpick for a different purpose. The metal fragment I had been seeking to remove had rough edges from being broken off in the accident.

Along with the tripod, a photographer can use a cable release bulb. This mechanism allows a photographer to trigger the camera to take a picture from a distance.

One light bulb at a particular brightness and another light bulb of double the brightness would be considered to be one stop apart.

As I mentioned above, the shutter speed needs to be set to b or bulb (bulb refers to the old fashioned type of remote shutter release, on which you literally squeezed and rubber bulb and triggered the shutter with a burst of compressed air).

The reason I recommend a rubber bulb blower to blow dust and grit out of the inside of the camera body is that when squeezed, it provides a concentrated "puff" of air, but not the overly powerful "gush" that most brands of canned air supply.

Canon recommend using a blower bulb, with the tip of the bulb held no further into the camera than the lens mount. This is described on page 156 of the EOS 10D manual. The theory is that with bursts of air you can blow dust off the sensor.

B stands for Bulb and has been around on cameras since the late 19th century.

Next, he went to work building his midground with a bare-bulb strobe, which essentially placed a pool of clean, bright daylight midframe. Its central highlight added a lively spark that brightened the otherwise dismal afternoon.

There is a special shutter speed, Bulb, that is available only in Manual mode. (On older cameras, it sometimes had its own mode on the dial.) With Bulb, the shutter stays open as long as you hold down the button.

Put your camera on manual and set the shutter speed dial to Bulb (B). This allows the shutter to remain open for as long as the cable release is locked on.
