The work starts off with the Layers palette. Figure 2 shows the Layers palette of the image before any work to burn the edges has been performed.

Burning is a trick for getting more detail out of a section of a picture. The photographer makes his print normally, and then masks off a large section of the print, usually with his hands.

Dodging and burning are among the oldest and most time honored techniques in the traditional darkroom.

One of the most common techniques of exposure tweaking is burning and dodging. This is a method of selectively adding or subtracting exposure in areas of the print.

Basically, a darkroom process that gives additional exposure to part of the image projected on an enlarger easel to make that area of the print darker.

Burning CDs Versus Computer Storage

Burning-in means darkening all tones in a small area-not some more than others. Changing the Brightness slider of Brightness/Contrast nicely mimics a true burning-in effect.

Burning and Dodging: Photoshop actually has burn and dodge tools available in the main tool box. The dodge tool looks like the magnification tool except it is black. The burn tool looks like a hand with the fingers together.

Most burning software packages have a "verification" option. This will considerably lengthen the burning session but is safer because the software will verify that the data on your hard disk corresponds to that on the CD/DVD.

The term "burning in" comes from the darkroom. A darkroom master would "burn in" areas of a print by adding more light in highly restricted ways while exposing the print under the enlarger. Ansel Adams was a master of this.

This manipulation may be dodging to prevent part of the image from getting too dark or it may be burning-in to produce detail from a part of the negative that is too dense.

Before flash bulbs, flash photography relied on openly burning powder - usually containing magnesium.

The aforementioned dodging and burning-in techniques were developed precisely because of this limitation. Photoshop gives us modern equivalents (my favorite is the Shadow/Highlight tool in CS2).

Digital Dodging & Burning

In addition to developing photos and printing, this can include darkroom processing and editing techniques, such as correcting color casts, burning in bright areas and adjusting the contrast.

By the way, burning to CD or DVD media is not a good idea for long-term storage. Most consumers don't know that optical media burned on a PC will only stay viable for five years or so, even if never used and properly stored.

A compact disc that holds either 650 or 700 MB of digital information, including digital photos. Creating one is commonly referred to as burning a CD.

Again, safety is very important here. That's why the assistant stands behind the subject and keeps the burning sparkler well away from the subject's body. Remember, safety is paramount.

I know there are no gold DVD+R disks available, but DVD+R is probably an intrinsically better recording scheme to start with, having a somewhat more advanced technology with better tracking and error correction as well as more reliable disk burning.

Most people OVEREXPOSE (i.e. too long shutter speed, or too open f/stop) thinking it's dark and they need lots of light on the film. Don't! Again, you are taking pictures of burning chemicals which are very bright.
