A CD that can be re-used to write data on using a CD-Rewriter.
CD-RW - CD-Rewritable: similar in virtually all respects to a CD-R, except that a CD-RW disc can be written and erased many times. This makes them best suited to many backup tasks, but not for long term storage of original digital photos.
CD-RW - Short for 'CD-Rewritable'. Similar in virtually all respects to a CD-R, except that a CD-RW disc can be written and erased many times.
CD-RW
Compact Disk Rewrite format allows you to write over data that you have already recorded.
CD-RW - CompactDisc ReWriteable - the newest kind of CD-R that can be erased and re-used many times, holds about 450MB of data.

CD-RW ( Compact Disk- Re-Writable)
A type of CD disk that enables you to write onto it in multiple sessions.
CD-R or CD-RW. CD-R stands for Compact Disc-Recordable. CD-RW stands for Compact Disc-ReWritable (or Recordable/Writable). With a CD-R, you can burn data onto the disc only once. With a CD-RW, you have the option of rewriting data onto the disc.

There are three formats: CD-ROM is read-only, CD-R is recordable or write once, read many (worm), and CD-RW is rewriteable. The RW format is not recommended for archiving digital image files because they can be accidentally over-written or erased.
CD
Compact Disks are the typical means of storing digital photographs. They hold about 700 megabytes of information, and can be CD-R for writeable CDs and CD-RW for re-writeable CDs.

With CDs the problems are minimal. You can select either CD-Recordable (CD-R) discs that can be written to once or CD-ReWriteable (CD-RW) discs that can be recorded, erased, and reused, just like a hard disk.
