CdS - Cadmium Sulphide: in photographic terms, this refers to an electronic light meter using a CdS light-dependent resistor as a sensor. These became common in the early 1970s, largely replacing the less sensitive Selenium meters.

For CDs, Things REALLY not to Do:
Scratch the label side of a CD.
Use a pen, pencil, or fine tip marker to write on the disc.
Write on the disc with markers that contain solvents.
Try to peel off or re-position a label.

CDs and DVDs are everywhere these days. Whether they are used to hold music, data or computer software, they have become the standard medium for distributing large quantities of information in a reliable package.

Writable CDs (CD-Rs) come in 650 and 700 MB versions. An average CD-R costs 25 cents and can hold about 250 six megapixel JPEG or 80 six megapixel uncompressed RAW images, so about 1,000 JPEG or 320 RAW images per dollar.

Cds
Cadmium Sulfide (Cell). A battery powered, current-modulating. light-sensing cell that was quite popular with lots of cameras exposure metering system and external metering devices.

CDs
Each month I also burn two sets of CDs of all my the photos I've made that month.

Using CDs and DVDs
Right - if you're not using a memory card or hard drive to store photos, the next best option might be to use CDs or DVDs. A CD-R can typically store 650 MB worth of photos and a DVD-R can store 4GB of photos.

Aren't CDs supposed to last over a hundred years? Why should I make copies? CDs and DVDs that have been pressed at a factory may last that long. Glass masters may last even longer. The CD-Rs that most of us use have a much shorter lifespan.

Burning CDs Versus Computer Storage
Once the photograph is successfully edited, it can be saved on the computer's hard drive or burnt onto a CD. If your computer crashes, you could lose all of the pictures you saved on your computer.

CDs and DVDs are less expensive when you buy them on spindles. You then use envelopes to store them in drawers.

There are many notebook computers that have built-in DVD drives, including this ultralight from Sony.

1. CDs and DVDs are relatively cheap.
2. Burning your images onto discs creates an external means of backup, this is a good idea should something go wrong with your computer, such as the hard drive crashing.

Recordable CDs (CD-Rs) are a technology heavily relied upon for archiving digital data.

First Leica with a light meter, a mechanical swinging-arm CDS cell positioned behind the lens. The added functionality required a redesigned, larger body compared with the traditional M3 dimensions. Certain wide angle lenses (early 21 mm f4.0 and f3.

photofinishers may be missing the print profit boat by mispricing the cost of CDs made from consumer's digital memory cards. In the U.SA.

Copying images onto Cds and sending them for review is much easier than film. E-mailing is even easier. I pick and scan my best slides. All of my slides need at least some minor touch-up. I don't try to make my images different than what they are.

Regular CDs and DVDs can deteriorate and lose quality in as little as a few years. CDs or DVDs that are specifically made for archiving photos, such as Archival Gold disks, are tested to have a storage life of 100+ years.

As backup, CDs or DVDs are hard to beat in the value category. They offer the largest space at the least cost, and nearly everyone has a CD or DVD burner now. Go with name-brand discs - I have had great experience with Verbatim and Ritek.

CDs are 4-3/4'' in diameter. CDs are faster and more accurate than magnetic tape for data storage. Faster, because even though data is generally written on a CD contiguously within each track, the tracks themselves are directly accessible.

File formats, optical storage media (CDs, DVDs) and hard drives use error detection and correction techniques to deal with data loss or corruption.

Once you've purged and reformatted onto CDs, DVDs or other digital formats, begin to label and organize. This will save you hours of time searching for that image you know you have somewhere but can't quite get your hands on.

Your old 35 mm negatives can be scanned and put on CDs to be included in your e-album.
Purpose made software is available to design and compile electronic photo albums.

The images were all shot digitally, burned to CDs and immediately distributed to department heads and other government agencies.

As a result a huge amount of effort is expended in creating and managing "off-line" archives of CDs and more recently DVDs of images. As a catastrophe backup, CDs, DVDs, or tapes are a great idea. As working storage media, they are a real hassle.

Gold CDs have about a 100 year life span, especially with scratch resistant coatings. Gold DVDs can be used also, but gold CD's have a better data verification system and are more reliable.

This CD was professionally manufactured by replication, a process that is superior to "burning" CDs when copying them.

-Cadmium sulfide cell (CdS) - photo-sensitive cell used in exposure meters. Fed by an electric current from a battery, its electrical resistance varies according to the amount of light it receives.

Sound cards are not necessary, but useful for playing your music CDs while you are waiting for the printer to print your images.
You will need a back-up storage device for those all so-valuable images. If you con afford it, I recommend two types: ...

optical disk
Some digital camera models record images directly onto mini-CDs that can be read by a computer's CD-ROM drive. These optical disks offer convenience and huge amounts of memory for little money. Optical disks can not be reused.

Digital files are best stored on external hard drives and backed up on archival CDs, or you can maintain two sets of drives for this purpose. Use software like iView Media to quickly organize RAW files, film scans and processed TIFF files.

Standard templates for things like CDs, DVDs just about anything that would be useful. Vector illustrations are always nice to have on hand. Buttons an visual effects are a big time saver. Quality fonts are always nice.

CD
Compact Disks are the typical means of storing digital photographs. They hold about 700 megabytes of information, and can be CD-R for writeable CDs and CD-RW for re-writeable CDs.

Digital photography storage media includes CompactFlash cards and CDs. Megabyte A Megabyte (mb) is a measurement of data storage equal to 1,024 kilobytes (kb) or roughly 1,000,000 bytes. Often referred to as a meg or megs.

GPD
Gallium Photo Diode. Metering cells for measuring exposure, using gallium arsenide-phosphide, just like SPD or Cds cells.
Gradation
A smooth transition between black and white, one colour and another, or colour and no-colour.

Researching for this digital camera buyers guide I found Sony also has a digital camera that uses small recordable CDs instead of memory cards. These can be used in any CD-ROM drive. It's the Sony MVC-CD250 2MP CD Mavica...pretty cool! ...

Exposure: Very good, CDS center weighted meter. Features: Very good: Flash Auto, Flash: Fill-in and Slow, (calibrated very well) Exposure compensation +1.5 and -1,5, Speed: 1/500 to 3.6 seconds (Excellent!!!). 25 to 3.600 ASA.

Also I'm not convinced by the longevity of CDs or DVDs. External drives are a good solution now they are cheaper, I can store them at a separate location so as not to be wiped out by fire or burglary, ...

If you want to archive your image collection on CDROM you can save space on your CDs by saving as JPEG with low compression in the neighborhood of 1:3 and reduce the average file size over 60% from uncompressed TIFF files.

Material that information is written to and stored on. Digital photography storage media includes CompactFlash cards and CDs.
Megabyte:
A measurement of data storage equal to 1024 kilobytes (KB).

For example, it is used for JPEG pictures and MPEG videos, and therefore also on DVDs, video CDs and for most other widespread digital video standards.

CDs are digital, meaning they won't fade or degrade with time. Plus, the combination of the Picture CD and index print is a perfect way to archive photos, and most importantly, find them again when the need arises.

Lab Scanning to CD at Time of Processing
The simplest and quickest method for digitizing your images is to have your lab create a CD when your negatives are processed. These CDs generally only run $3 to $5 and require no time investment by you.
