Center Weighted Metering
The first automatic exposure cameras used center weighted metering because we hadn't developed more advanced computer programs to calculate light levels.

Metering system that places importance on an area of the image below the center (in landscape format). This corresponds to the best portion to meter in an average shot of land and sky.

Center weighted metering would be effective when you have a bright background or backlit subject. For example, if you were taking a photograph of a persons face on a sunny day at the beach.
Center Weighted Average (CWA) is a less sophisticated approach that assumes whatever is centered in the frame is the main subject, so it calculates an average that gives more importance to whatever is in the middle of the frame.

I never use center weighted or spot metering!
When I need to make something lighter or darker I use the exposure compensation control with my camera in automatic. Every camera has a compensation control or buries it in a menu.

If you have a modern camera, the chances are that the default metering system is 'center weighted average', which means that, although it takes an average reading of the whole scene, it takes more notice of what is in the middle of the frame.
Some cameras don't meter consistently between spot, averaging and center weighted. Use a gray card and fill the camera's viewfinder frame with the card. Use a normal or telephoto lens and slide film for this test.
Canon digital cameras use a center weighted metering system, which means that the camera measure the exposure from a small area in the center of the image.
The LX3 has three metering modes: multi metering, center weighted and spot, each one gradually offering more precise control over your exposure.
A smaller number use center weighted or spot metering. All three metering methods can provide identical exposures. In the end, it doesn’t matter which one is used.
Use the spot meter on the darker of your friend's faces to properly expose it, or get closer and use the center weighted light meter on just their face (see your camera manual!). Notice the aperture setting, and ISO setting.
Camera metering can handle more weakly on a spot meter than, say, a center weighted average metering system. EV is commonly used in black & White photographic process.

Some scenes involve difficult lighting situations where a matrix metering or center weighted metering system of a standard camera would incorrectly meter. Spot metering allows a user to pick a specific point in the scene and meter it only.
It is known as subtractive color system because the required color is produced by subtracting different quantities of cyan, magenta and yellow from white.
