The central focus point is more accurate/sensitive in many cameras, and so it is best to use this (instead of the outer focus points) - even if using it requires having to recompose afterwards.

 


So if you focus on something with the central focus point, recompose the image by moving the camera and then take a photo there's a good chance that the flash metering will be out. In this case you should lock flash by using FEL prior to recomposing.

The central focus of this image is the moon setting over the red glowing, desert mountains. However, the image would have been rather boring if the mountains in the image had extended down to the bottom of the image.

The middle orientation probably has a lot to do with the central focusing sensor of cameras and people's tendency to lock focus and then just shoot. I do the Nikon Shuffle of locking focus on the subject and then recomposing the scene.

A photographer should then orient the central focus of his picture at or in the middle of any of these four power points. The effect of the resulting picture will change depending on where the subject is placed.

Divide your frame into thirds and try to place the central focus of the photo at the intersection of two of the dividing lines instead of right in the middle. Also, look for interesting vantage points.

In 23-area AF the camera automatically selects the right area(s) of the scene from 23 points. Panasonic's unique AF Tracking mode starts with a central focus area.

Panoramics are long and skinny; square negatives often make it hard for the viewer to recognize the central focus of a composition. A 35mm format is pretty close to a golden retangle.
