Beyond the Channel Mixer: Black and White in Photoshop CS3
For quite some time, the standard of black and white conversion in Photoshop has been the Channel Mixer. But times change, and so do versions of Photoshop.

INPUT/OUTPUT CHANNELS Input/output (I/O) channels provide a means of communication between the CPU and peripheral devices.

In the Advanced Blending options, uncheck the Red and Blue channel options and click OK. Next, double-click on the icon in the Layers Palette for Layer 2 and uncheck the Red and Green channel options. Click OK.

Channel - All digital images consist of pixels that are made up of primary colors. Basically the channel is one component of a color image.
Chromatic Aberrations - Color distortions that are a result of failure to evenly focus the lens.

Channel
One piece of information stored with an image. True color images, for instance, have three channels-red, green and blue.

Channels
Channels are grayscale images that store different types of information: Color information channels are created automatically when you open a new image.

Channel
Digital images separate color information into individual channels that represent the components such as Red, Green, and Blue (RGB).

channel rubber
small rubber channel to insulate the wire mesh from the metal frame of an electrically heated or hot printing screen.
channel support
a display part for attaching landscaped part of a display in a forward position.

Channel
Photoshop uses the term Channels to describes black and white and colour image data. In Photoshop, one channel id typically defined as having up to eight bits of grayscale image information.

A Channel is a single component of a pixel's color. For a colored pixel in GIMP, these components are usually Red, Green, Blue and sometimes transparency (Alpha).

Red Channel Noise
When we first started reviewing the new batch of 3 megapixel digital cameras we noticed visible noise on flat blue areas, this turned out to be in the red channel and was thus dubbed "Red Channel Noise", ...

alpha channel

The channel mixer can be used for adding great effects to colour pictures as well - such as changing the red and blue channels and stuff like that, making colours really wacky, turning the ocean red and the skies green.

PhotoChannel

The only one so far that got the Black and White image perfect. Absolutely no color casts at all. Auto exposure test images were also perfect.

The A-Channel reveals some interesting properties. The areas that were unnaturally red in the picture show up as bright areas with high contrast (sharp edges to the surrounding areas).

Multi-channel Broadcast Wave Format. Container format consisting of an RF64 audio file and accompanying BEXT or iXML metadata chunk. Surround sound audio archival format.
metadata

Better: Channel Mixer
After the Wow! factor wears off, newly digital photographers start saying things like, 'That's neat, but now I want quality and control.

Go to the channels drop down menu and ensure you have selected RGB, this will allow you to make contrast adjustments to the entire image.

Nikon offers an increasingly versatile digital camera lineup to meet a diverse range of needs and applications, and the image sensor can be an important factor in camera selection.

Hint for landlubbers: Maybe you don't even like to swim, and the idea of free diving in a clear blue ocean or a muddy swamp strikes you a foolhardy.

Port - A channel of the computer used for input or output with a peripheral. A scanner interface board includes a special port that the scanner can use to communicate with the computer.

5. Select the Red channel

Lab color mode Lab mode describes a theoretical color space where color and brightness are split into three different channels. two for color and one for brightness.

The two colors used are complementary to each other, and the images are then put together on the same image base allowing the channels to be separated later by the viewer using so called 3d glasses (usually red/blue or red/green).

7 Click (highlight) the lightness channel.
8 Under the Image menu, select Mode>Greyscale (discard colour information).
9 Command click on the grey channel (to load the selection).
10 Under the Select menu, choose Image>Inverse to select the shadows.

I'll give one example of individual color channel adjustment before we leave the histogram adjustment section. Remember our photo of the windfall apples on page 2 of this article. It had a slight warm cast due to late afternoon sun.

Make sure the O-ring channel on the camera or housing is also clean.
Grease 'Em. Use only a very light coating of the appropriate O-ring grease. Put a dab on your finger and run the O-ring through.

Arca-Swiss style clamps usually have an open channel design. You can slide a plate in either end of the clamp and out the other (bidirectional).

In Photoshop's Preferences, uncheck the Color Channels in Color box under Display and Cursors. Each RGB channel now will display in black-and-white, as if the scene was shot on black-and-white film through a red, green or blue filter.

Meanwhile many RAW images are initially captured by the sensor in 48 or 36 bit RGB (16 or 12 bits per channel) but are reduced to 24 bit RGB (8 bits per channel) when converted into JPEG files.

Levels: Similar to brightness and contrast control, except it allows the user to adjust highlight, shadow, and mid-tone areas separately as well as colors through channels.

RAW files support either 12 or 14-bit per channel color bit-depth, depending on the camera.

You can also specify any one of four channels for flash control, each capable of controlling up to three groups of flash units, and check that all are within transmission distance by pressing a test button.

" Convert your color original to black and white with your favorite method -- "canned" film actions, channel mixing, Russell Brown's "filter and film" technique, the "layered channels" technique I describe below, or any of a number of others.

Each pixel in the image has a numerical value of between 0 and 255 and is made up of three color channels. So for example a pixel could be 37-red, 76-green and 125-blue and it would then look like this .

Update September 1, 2001 - As I type this now, I have just watched The Learning Channel's (TLC) special on the human face, hosted by John Cleese of Monty Python fame. A short segment of the special dealt with a ratio, a certain 1.

Camera sensors typically have 12-bits-per-channel color (red, green and blue) for a 36-bit image (which JPEG compression reduces to 8 bits per channel).

First, it offers a great large preview screen of your changes, which you can easily set to any channel.

You can select each colour channel separately and adjust them until you get the correct overall colour you desire. Next you can 'saturate the image'. This makes the colours more vibrant - a bit like using Fuji Velvia instead of Kodak Ektachrome.

While at one level it might involve having to go through bureaucratic channels in order to arrive at a certain place, the shooting itself wont begin until you can win people´s trust, ...

Typically, you wouldn't define the alpha channel on a pixel-by-pixel basis, but rather per object. Different parts of the object would have different levels of transparency depending on how much you wanted the background to show through.

You can specify one of four different data channels for flash control, and each flash unit can be put into one of three groups.

Any color can be produced by adding the colors of the three color channels RGB (Red, Green, and Blue). If the colors of two of the color channels are mixed in equal proportions, new base colors are created.

Convert the color file to Lab by going to the Image menu, choose Mode, than Lab Color. Activate the Lightness channel by going to Window manual and choosing Show Channels. Click on the Lightness Channel. It will appear highlighted.

Long exposures, higher ISO settings or higher temperatures can introduce noise, while some color channels - notably the blue channel - will be more affected by noise than others.

There are many discussions out there about how the histogram represents a combination of the three RGB channels (Red-Green-Blue), or only the green channel of the three in the RGB, or even only a combined luminance channel.

CMYK image A four-channel image containing a cyan, magenta, yellow, and black channel. A CMYK image is generally used to print a color separation. When submitting photos to traditional printing presses you will often need to convert to CMYK.

The PNG format supports grayscale and RGB colour modes with a single alpha channel, and Bitmap and indexed-colour modes without alpha channels. PNG uses the saved alpha channel to define transparency in the file.

In Nikon D-SLRs, moiré is greatly reduced by means of advanced image processing algorithms and optical low-pass filters. Monaural Sound reproduction that uses only one channel.
