Characterization
The process of creating an ICC profile that describes the unique colour characteristics of a particular device such as a monitor, scanner, colour printer, and printing press. Press profiles may be based on standards such as SWOP.

It takes extensive testing to match the tonal structure of negatives to a specific medium, which can't be done through calibration and characterization.
