One word of warning before we talk about charging batteries. Never try to charge nonrechargeable batteries. They might overheat or even explode.
The two main types of chargers are quick chargers and slow ones.

 


Battery charger / AC Adapter
The battery charges in the supplied charger / adapter. A full charge should take approximately 90 minutes. The LED on the charger indicates the current charge status with a number of blinks.

Nikon Battery Charger, a Trusted Camera Companion

Recently produced rechargeable batteries often come ready-to-use that they don't need to be recharged prior to use.

The low price no doubt applied to the Malaysian/Korean/Outer Mongolian made version which comes without the battery, charger, manual, strap, instruction book and software. All those cost extra.

It's like a cell phone or a power tool or anything else that has its own battery - you usually have a charger that the battery goes into for a while to charge, while the charger is plugged into a wall power socket.

Has room for the charger - if your camera comes with rechargeable batteries you will probably want to take the charger with you on longer trips.

I also have my SB600 flash with a battery grip, extra batteries, 2 AA chargers, my D90 charger, 3 filters not on my lenses and all my cleaning pens and clothes.

Even with the incredibly long life of batteries for the D2H I still make sure to have a third battery with me (the first two are in my two cameras). With the D1X and D1H I carried a total of 4-5.

When you buy a digital camera, the basic package almost always includes extras such as a battery charger, lens cap, batteries, and software. One of the more disreputable practices a dealer can engage in is called unbundling.

I recommend that you get an extended battery shoe or auxiliary charger for your iPhone, since the GPS receiver is very power hungry. I have an iGo charger that I can operate with AA batteries to juice up the phone while I am in the field.

*Use recommended power sources and chargers to avoid equipment damage.
*Store your equipment properly when not in use. Store lose equipment securely to avoid damage when packing for a shoot or traveling.

A popular place to get batteries and chargers. I ordered a charger and two sets of NiMH AA bateries for my Fuji FinePix 1300. Haven't had any problems.

In my suitcase, I carry a tripod with the head detached, battery chargers, wires and cords, some filters and smaller miscellaneous items. I protect them by padding them with clothing.

Professionals always carry spare batteries for their gear. If you are taking a longer trip, don't forget your charger. There are even car chargers that work in most rental vehicles for long road trips.

Remember your batteries. If it needs a certain type of batteries, or a type of charger, bring it. The room that they take is minimal and the photographic opportunities that you could miss are infinite.

Tip #2: Take the proper charger adaptors with you when visiting overseas.

- Battery Life is important because it would be very disappointing to have an empty battery in just few shots. So better get extra accessories such as rechargeable batteries and the battery charger.

Just a few months ago my wife and I took a photography trip to Croatia and I totally forgot to pack the battery charger with me! So if you are as clumsy as I am, maybe you should trust your wife in packing things up for you.

They are rechargeable like Nicad batteries but they are safe to throw away in landfills. They also do not exhibit the "memory" effect that Nicad batteries have shown to exhibit. They need chargers that are specifically made for NiMH batteries.

Very good article. #6 is vital - I shot 550 pics during a vacation to attend my sister's wedding. 200 were worth burning to CDs for family. I carry two 256m chips plus a spare battery and charger in my camera bag.
That's the best.
