Cibachrome
Techniques Glossary Cibachrome
Processing materials made by Ilford that are used to make prints from colour slides. Although still widely used the Cibachrome name was changed to Ilfochrome over a decade ago.

Cibachrome
A process by which a photographic print is made directly from a color transparency. Noted for rich color, brilliant clarity and unprecedented archival quality for color prints. Also called Ilfochrome.

Ilfochromes (Cibachromes)
Prints from slides that won't fade for 500 years or more if stored in the dark, thus outlasting the original slide. The traditional Cibachrome material is plastic which makes for an incredibly glossy surface.

Cibachromes Cibachromes, also known as Ilfochromes, are a common name for chemical prints made from a slide original (a positive-to-positive photographic process).

At the time this training manual was written, Cibachrome products are the only direct positive color materials manufactured using this process.

Except for a few positive processes such as Ilfochrome (Cibachrome), prints are made from negatives, so they get darker as more light falls on them.

Kodachrome cannot be processed except in Kodak laboratories. There are also a small number of relatively uncommon processes using dye decomposition technologies such as Cibachrome.

When the original is completed, I copy the finished version on transparency material (if a Cibachrome print is desired) or negative material if an Ektacolor print is desired. Naturally there are a wealth of digital variations as well.

Though Porter's color was revolutionary at the time, dye-transfer reproduction pales in comparison to the results Ketchum has achieved with modern color printing technologies like Cibachrome and, more recently, Fuji Crystal Archive.

Our afternoon film critiques are now more free-form as we encourage students to take the lead in talking about their shots and asking their own questions. That evening, we introduce them to Cibachrome print techniques.
