5mm Circular Fisheye
I tried the newest Sigma 4.5mm circular fisheye. It didn't focus reliably with my Nikon D3 or on a D40, so I had set it to manual focus.

[edit] Circular fisheye
Canon FD 7.5 mm f/5.6 (note: not EF mount) (not in production)
Nikkor 8mm f/2.8 lens (not in production)
Peleng 8 mm
Sigma 8 mm f/3.5 EX DG (replaces the Sigma 8 mm f/4 EX DG)
Sigma 4.5 mm f/2.

Circular fisheye lenses are harder to come by. Canon doesn't make one in an EOS mount. Sigma however does make an 8mm f4 circular fisheye lens in an EOS mount at around $580.

Circular fisheyes: have a 180 degree field of view when measured along the smallest dimension of the image, resulting in a circular image with black corners. In 35mm format, they usually have a focal length around 8mm.

There is a wide range of land cameras available, so you have quite a choice, and the range of lenses is almost limitless, from circular fisheyes to long telephotos, ...

8 EX DC Circular Fisheye HSM (Canon, Nikon, Sigma)
Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye (Canon, Nikon, Sigma)
Sigma 10mm f/2.8 EX DC Fisheye (Pentax, Sony)
Sigma 10mm f/2.8 EX DC Fisheye HSM (Canon, Nikon, Sigma)
Sigma 15mm f/2.

how do I then create the circular fisheye HDR images used for Global ilumination within a 3D app.
My guess is start with a wide angle lens on a tripod, but how to I shoot a 360 degree pespective, and then contain this to a circular image
