One of my most fascinating discoveries in the world of close-up photography was made long ago. Upon awakening one early morning, I looked outside and saw one of the heaviest blankets of ground fog I had ever seen on my farm.

Metal tubes used to obtain the additional separation between lens and film for close-up photography. They are fitted with screw thread or bayonet mounts to suit various lens mounts.

Macro Photography: The term ‘macro’ is simply photo-speak for close-up photography. Those tightly-framed close-up images of bees atop a flower are an example of macro photography.

Sharp focus is essential in close-up photography. Regardless of the type of camera you are using, your subject may still be out of focus due to camera movement or if the wind is blowing your subject around.

Often when people are interested in getting into close-up photography, they spend some time trying to figure out what the best macro lens is.

Close-up photography refers to taking pictures of objects at close distances, generally less than two feet.

A macro lens's focus is closer to the subject and is used for close-up photography.
Fisheye. A fisheye lens uses an angle of view up to 180 degrees. The angle distorts the photograph so the four sides appear to be farther away.
Teleconverter.

Primarily used for close-up photography, macro refers to a one-to-one or higher magnification of a subject provided by optics (i.e., a macro lens).

During our surface interval we motor over to Pickles Reef as I lecture on macro and close-up photography. We choose Pickles because of the rich variety of lettuce slugs, scorpionfish, flamingo tongue cowries and other reef critters.

Macro photography is close-up photography of usually very small objects. The classical definition is that the image projected on the "film plane" (i.e., film or a digital sensor) is close to the same size as the subject.

Macro lens - A lens especially made for extreme close-up photography that lets you focus on a subject a few inches or less from the lens surface.

Annoyingly, a lot of species like to bask with their wings at an angle of 45° - which demands huge depth-of-field, a luxury you don’t have in close-up photography, and doesn’t look good.

Bellows: An accessory with a flexible pleated material that goes between the camera and lens to extend the lens to film distance for extreme close-up photography.

Fill-in is most often used in portraiture, but it is by no means limited in its scope. It can just as easily be used in close-up photography and even architectural photography.
