Closing down the aperture to F4.0, a more pleasant image is obtained with enough dark areas to indicate it is night time (dusk, really) and enough lighted areas to reproduce what my eyes saw at the outdoors skating rink at the Mississauga Civic ...

A silhouette effect (no shadow detail) of a back-lighted scene is produced by closing down one f/stop from the basic exposure. If shadow detail is desired, an increase of four times (two f/stops) from the basic exposure is required.

" Well, it is not merely by closing down the aperture of superb wide angle lenses. They maximize DOF (depth of field), the region of acceptable sharpness, by focusing at the hyperfocal distance.

I have the chance of buying an Elinchrom 404 pack for £50 from a studio that is closing down. I am aware that the heads need to be minimum 2400j but i wonder if you could please tell me: 1.What flash durations the pack is capable of 2.

It's a good performer but not seen at its best with the lens at maximum aperture. Closing down a stop is advised. Price and limited compatibility restricts its appeal and it’s poor value compared to the independents.

Blurred action shot
To show a sense of motion by blurring your subject in action, you must decrease the shutter speed to increase light and compensate by closing down the aperture (raising the f-stop).

To compensate, the shutter time would need to be increased as well by 4 stops, that is, adjust exposure time down to 1/1000th. Closing down the aperture limits the resolution due to the diffraction limit.

The dynamic adaptation that the human eye automatically performs when it encounters high levels of contrast, opening up and closing down over many moments, can be simulated in a photograph made in a single moment.

You were already at a shutter speed of 1/4000 second, so there's not much room there for offsetting a wider aperture-but why were you set to ISO 1600 in direct sun? That pushed up your shutter speed and closing down your lens aperture, ...

Background of this page is medium tone. Tree trunks, blue jeans, green grass, blue sky are all medium tone. If your subject is medium tone, you can trust your meter, otherwise you must compensate by opening up or closing down.

Moving the indicator to the "plus" side by slowing the shutter speed or opening the aperture increases the exposure and will lighten the image; moving the indicator to the "minus" side by increasing shutter speed or closing down the aperture will ...
