In truth, color silver halide images are actually made out of three (or more) layers of black-and-white images that interact with color couplers to produce layers of color dye that when viewed together give the illusion of a full range of colors.
The color couplers in the blue-sensitive layer will form yellow dye during processing, the green layer will form magenta dye and the red layer will form cyan dye.
Agfacolor Neue had color couplers that were integrated with emulsion layers and this simplified film processing and created an impact in the photography industry. All color films except for Kodak, are based on the Agfacolor Neue technology. ...
-Substantive film - color film in which the color couplers are contained within the emulsion. -Subtractive primaries - yellow, magenta and cyan.
-Chromogenic development - process in which the oxidation products of development combine with color couplers to form dyes during processing. -Chromogenic materials - color photographic materials which form dyes during processing.
Unlike conventional color paper processes where dyes are formed from color couplers during processing, dyes in Cibachrome materials are incorporated in the blue, green, and red light-sensitive layers during manufacturing.
