Color Gamut
One reason it's a good idea to edit in a color space with a larger gamut than your target space is that your color adjustments will have greater fidelity.

Color gamut: Range of colors that can be formed by all combinations of a given set of light sources or colorants of a color reproduction system.
Color Bars: See control strips ...

color gamut
any color medium representing its own range of colors including that which is applied to film, a monitor, printed images, and the human eye.
color harmonies

COLOR GAMUT: The range of colors within a calibrated color space. Some color spaces are 'wider' than others in that they contain more variations of colors.

A color gamut is described by an ICC Profile which is a small file that describe the color space of an image or imaging device. In many image file formats, the profile for the image's color space can be embedded in the file.

In the above example, Standard "A" has a greater range of greens than Standard "B," so the colors in the original image get squeezed from a wide range of intensities to a narrow range.

Rougher papers tend to scatter the light and lower the paper's color gamut (color range). If you look at a paper with a microscope, you can see that a glossy surface is less course and more uniform than a matt surface.

ProPhoto RGB contains such a large color gamut, you run the risk of posterizing, creating unnatural transitions in your image, with simple corrections.

In color reproduction, including computer graphics and photography, the gamut, or color gamut (pronounced /ˈgæmət/), is a certain complete subset of colors.

These are color gamut, color space, working space, and profile. Once we understand what they mean and how they relate to each other, we'll look at what your computer does with them.

But your camera natively shoots into a color space of its own--typically called its color gamut--or the range of colors it can capture. To the left is a comparison of the the native sensitivity of the sensor of a D1X compared to sRGB.

The industry's top hitters-Gretag-Macbeth, ColorVision, LaCie, X-Rite and others-have made analyzing color spaces, creating profiles and viewing a color gamut so user-friendly that what was untouchable to all except the über-geek a few years ago now ...

exr suffix, high color gamut and precision, DR about 30 f-stops)
Radiance (.hdr suffix, less color gamut, huge DR)
BEF (private format by Unified Color to get better color quality) ...

They use different technologies (monitors use additive color while printers use subtractive color), different hardware, different software, and different color gamuts.

The color gamut captured by a digital camera can exceed Adobe RGB by a wide margin in some instances.

In the last five years, projectors evolved from low-resolution, dim displays with a truncated color gamut to bright units capable of showing the rich colors and vivid details of your best images.

This proprietary technology offers an innovative image file format similar to a JPEG, but with the dynamic range and color gamut information of raw DCR camera files.

The 2200 uses Epson's Ultrachrome inkset to print digital photos, which contain pigments that have a wider color gamut than the earlier Archival inks on the 2000P. The trade-off is a bit less longevity but I think the trade-off is well worthwhile.

or captures color has its own way of reproducing all the colors in the visible spectrum, which is known as its color space. The most common color spaces in digital photography are Adobe RGB 1998 and Adobe sRGB. The former has a broader color gamut ...

FILM: A processed 120 format frame of film costs less than a buck and has more resolution and dynamic range and color gamut than any digital system available to anyone. Even military satellite reconnaissance uses sensors with lower resolution.

Smaller droplet sizes, in some cases as tiny as 3 picoliters (i.e., 3 trillionths of a liter!) allow the printer to place more dots next to each other, creating smoother tonal gradations, finer detail in highlight areas, and wider color gamuts.

LCD computer monitors can range from consumer-grade displays with reduced contrast, sharpness and color gamut to high-bit, wide-gamut, TFT (thin-film transistors) active matrix displays designed for digital photography and graphics applications.

SLR is still popular in high-end and professional cameras because they have interchangeable lenses and far less shutter lag, allowing photographs to be timed more precisely. Also the pixel resolution, contrast ratio, refresh rate, and color gamut of ...
