The Additive RGB Color Space
The Subtractive CMYk Colors
A print emits light indirectly by reflecting light that falls upon it.

Color Spaces
A color space plots each of the millions of possible colors on a three-dimensional chart in such a way that their positions and spacing show how they relate to one another—often called scaling.

A color profile is a file that your computer uses to understand what it needs to know about any given color space.

Color Spaces
Bit depth also plays a role in color space selection. The bits of a digital file must be spread across the entire color space that is used with an image.

Color Space, Color Bit Depth
The RGB (red, green, blue) color space is the default for all consumer scanners and digital cameras. Another example of a color space is CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black).

Color Space - Also called gamut or color gamut. Complete subset of colors.
Color Temperature - Measurement of color expressed in Kelvin. Different light sources result in different temperatures.

Ron asked: "The instructors for Photoshop at the UC ext. courses there in Cupertino always said to use Adobe RGB color space. Now I see that people say sRGB might be better." ...

Color space (for dSLR users, effects JPEGs only)
dSLRs have the option for shooting in adobe RGB, or sRGB. Adobe is a larger color space, is better for printing, and is the recommended color space.

Color Space - Digital cameras use known color profiles to generate their images. The most common is sRGB or AdobeRGB and this information along with the camera and exposure data is stored in Exif header of the JPEG file.

color space
When a particular color scheme uses an ordered n-tuple to specify color, all the possible values corresponding to colors can be plotted on an n-dimensional graph.

Color Space
System that describes colors for objective color production, as the Norm Color and CIELAB systems; also called color model.

Color Space
A geometric (usually three-dimensional) representation of colors that can be produced by a color model. Multiple color spaces can share the same color model.

Color space coordinates: Axes used to define the location of a color in three-dimensional color space.

color space
a three-dimensional geometric representation of the colors that can be seen and/or generated using a certain color model.

Color Space
The range of colors that can be reproduced on a computer monitor or in print form. The most commonly used color spaces for digital imaging are the baseline sRGB and wider-gamut Adobe RGB (1998).

Myth: Color space has the most important effect on color
Do you use Adobe RGB? Is sRGB a pro format? Should pros really start using ColorMatch RGB? Or is there some other new color space permutation that will give even better results?

YUV color space Y stands for the luminance (lightness) information, and is compatible to black&white (and gray) signal.

Color Spaces
Every device that produces, measures, or captures color has its own way of reproducing all the colors in the visible spectrum, which is known as its color space.

Color Space is a mathematical model describing the range of colors possible in an image file or on an imaging device, such as monitor or printer.

RGB color space - Red, green, blue; the additive color model used in digital images and displayed on a monitor.

The Color Space setting is mainly for commercial printing purposes. Leave it alone unless you anticipate that your photos will be published in a book or magazine.

The Lab color space (also called the L*a*b* color space) is a color model developed in the beginning of the 1930s by the Commission Internationale d`Eclairage (CIE). It includes all the colors that the human eye can perceive.

RGB, the color space that most cameras use, is based on a Red/Green/Blue color wheel. The CYM color system is modeled with a Cyan/Magenta/Yellow color wheel. Finally, the RYB system relies on a Red/Yellow/Blue color wheel.

The 3D RGBO color space is normalized to rgbO, with r = R / (R+G+B) etc.
An irregular cone is formed using O as its tip and the curve formed by plotting the spectral colors in rgbO as its base. This cone is then intersected with the (1,1,1) plane ...

I correct any gross color casts, make preliminary exposure corrections if necessary, perhaps choose a color space, but my goal can be summarized as: first do no harm.

Next, we want to use image files that are tagged with a specific color space. The most common ones are sRGB and Adobe RGB (1998). The former is best if the Web is the intended destination of the photo. For printing, use Adobe RGB (1998).

A color is said to be "out of gamut" when its position in one device's color space cannot be directly translated into another device's color space.

These are color gamut, color space, working space, and profile. Once we understand what they mean and how they relate to each other, we'll look at what your computer does with them.

All of the images so far are in the same color space (Ia or sRGB). I tried using a little compensation on the camera (+0.3 and +0.7) and using fill-flash (both at +-0 and -0.7), which of course helped a great deal, ...

SRGB (sRGB) is a standard ICC color space profile created by Microsoft and HP to be more accurate when calibrating color reproduction on their devices (i.e. Microsoft software, HP displays and printers) and on the internet.

One of the hidden secrets of Gimp is that it supports the LAB color space so you can get access to the L, a and b channels in an image.

Contrast-A allows users to interact with a 3-dimensional RGB color space, experiment with color combinations, check the contrast according to both WCAG 2.0 and 1.0 and see the results for different types of color deficiency.

In future tutorials we will discuss more advanced concepts within Adobe Camera Raw such as determining the best bit depth and color space for your Raw output files, as well as items like Lens Corrections and Camera Calibration.

ICC Color Profile - These are embedded metadata labels, developed by the International Color Consortium to indicate the color space used to create and edit the file.

However, when shooting RAW, just decrease your Auto White Balance to WB-2 (on a D2X/D2Xs), for example, select sRGB color space and you willl automatically get warmer colors like in the recent sample below at right, ...

*Don't expect RGB results from a CMYK printer. CMYK is a smaller color space, meaning there are simply fewer colors available.

the information in the header of each JPEG file. This means that any program that supports JPEG files, which includes all web browsers and image editing applications can read the information. The EXIF format uses sRGB as the default color space.
