Colour Temperature is a way of describing a colour-quality of light. It is a measure of how much light of different colours is present. High colour temperatures have a lot of blue light and low temperatures have more red light.

Colour temperature

Light Colour Temperature
The reason that pictures turn out with a yellow/orange cast in incandescent (tungsten) lighting and bluish in fluorescent lighting is because light has a colour temperature.

What is colour temperature?
The definition of colour temperature is highly technical - it refers to the colour of light produced by a theoretical "black body" object that's heated to a certain temperature, measured in Kelvin temperature units.

Also see "colour temperature", "UV". Technically, it explained as a piece of material which restricts the transmission of radiation. Generally coloured to absorb light of certain colours. Can be used over light sources or over the camera lens.

Most importantly, watch out for a clash between the different colour temperatures of natural and artificial lighting.

Another thing which I find enhances sunset shots is to set the camera's colour temperature to ‘daylight' (or ‘flash', which is balanced for daylight).

For film cameras, professional photographers have a choice of films designed for different colour temperatures, the common ones being daylight and tungsten films.

I used RAW so that I could fine tune the colour temperature, contrast and exposure at the post-processing stage. It also gave me leeway in case I overexposed the photo - RAW files retain highlight detail that would be lost if you used JPEG.

Every light source has its own colour temperature, which has the potential to produce a colour cast. Setting the white balance correctly ensures that objects that are white, will appear so in the final image, for a more natural look.

Not really necessary in digital photography as the camera's white balance system adjusts for the colour temperature of the scene. You can also use them to protect the camera's lens from scratching, fingerprints or dirt.
