-Condenser enlarger. of carrier is a holder where the negative is placed between two sheets of glass. This type of holder is used for larger negatives since they have a tendency to sag in the center when they are not supported by glass.

Condenser Enlarger: An enlarger using one or more glass condenser lenses between the lamp and film plane to provide a focused and even distribution of light.

CONDENSER ENLARGER - Photographic enlarger with an undiffused light enabling high contrast and definition in a print.
CONFLICTING SHADOWS - Shadows that point in the direction of the main light in a studio lighting set-up.

Condenser enlarger
An enlarger that uses specular light and has several lenses (condensers) to concentrate the light and increase the illumination. It produces images with more contrast and sharper detail than a diffusion enlarger.

Condenser enlargers produce higher contrast than diffusers because light is scattered from its path by the negative's image silver; this is called the Callier Effect.

Diffusion-Condenser Enlarger
An enlarger that combines diffuse light with a condenser system, producing more contrast and sharper detail than a diffusion enlarger but less contrast and blemish emphasis than a condenser enlarger.

A condenser enlarger uses a series (usually two or three) large lenses inside the lamp housing to spread and then project the light from the bulb.

Other advice for 35 mm B&W: Use a condenser enlarger! Use a Leica enlarging lens (Focotar 2, 50 mm f/4.5. Costs about $800? ALL OTHER LENSES GREATLY INFERIOR!). Develop film to CI about 0.42. (Use a developing time about 0.7 to 0.

This data is for a typical diffusion enlarger. For negatives to be printed by condenser enlarger reduce the above times by approximately 20%.

While diffusion enlargers us a piece of diffusion glass to spread light across a negative (and, therefore, the image from the negative onto the photo paper), the condenser enlarger spreads light through a condenser lens.
