Continuous-tone image: Photographic image that shows a continuous density range between the lighter and darker areaswithout screening dots.

Continuous-tone image
An image containing gradient tones from black to white.
Contouring
Another name for banding or posterization.

Continuous-tone printers can print each dot at many different shades of lightness and darkness.

Black-and-White Continuous-Tone Originals To reproduce the tone gradation of a continuous-tone original, you must use a long-scale film. As discussed previously, a commercial type of film, such as Kodak Commercial film, is recommended.

They're the essence of continuous-tone images. In most cases, you want to preserve them. On occasion, you want to modify them. Sometimes, you want to create them.

For continuous-tone images such as photos, JPEG's can also be a lot smaller than GIF's due to the way the data is stored. It's not uncommon for JPEG's to compress 10:1 or even 20:1, whereas photos stored as GIF's top out at around 5:1.

It is a bitmap format commonly used to display photographs and other continuous-tone images in web pages on the Internet.

An image where brightness appears consistent and uninterrupted; each pixel in a continuous-tone image uses at least one byte for its red, green, and blue values. This allows 256 density levels per color or more than 16 million color mixtures.

Halftone. A method used to reproduce continuous-tone images, representing the image as a series of dots.
Histogram. A graph that represents the distribution of pixels brightness within a digital image.

diffuse dither
a method for printing continuous-tone images on laser printers in which the grayscale information is represented by randomly located printer dots.

JPEG is a compression technique supported by the format of JPEG, PDF, and PostScript language file. JPEG compression provides the best results with continuous-tone images when the size of the file is the main factor, such as photographs.
