Continuous Autofocus is an automatic focus mode where the camera's computer and servo constantly adjust the focus of a lens up until the point in which the shutter release is pressed.

Continuous Autofocus - (Continuous-AF) The autofocus system is full-time and works even before the shutter release is pressed.
Contrast - A measure of rate of change of brightness in an image.

Continuous Autofocus. As it says. The auto focus system is continuously working on focussing on the subject.
Contrast. The measure of rate of change of brightness in an image.

Continuous autofocus. An automatic focusing setting in which the camera constantly refocuses the image as you frame the picture. This setting is often the best choice for moving subjects. See also single autofocus.

The continuous autofocus system of the Nikon D3S is essentially unchanged from that featured in the D3 and D3X.

Select single autofocus if you plan on shooting stationary subjects or continuous autofocus for moving subjects. In continuous autofocus, camera continuously adjusts focus to keep moving subject in sharp focus.

The camera will turn on continuous autofocus (see later in this tutorial). White balance will be set to direct sun. Flash will be set to automatic. ISO will generally be set to automatic but will rarely go above ISO400. Metering is usually matrix.

Be warned, however, that in continuous autofocus mode shots can still be taken even if the focus lock has not yet been achieved.
