Contrast Masking in Photoshop
Contrast masking is a traditional "wet" darkroom technique used to help bring the contrast range of a film image into line with what can be printed on paper.

Contrast is the difference in visual properties that makes an object (or its representation in an image) distinguishable from other objects and the background.

Contrast & Dominance
When creating a composition-either something freeform, or a more text based layout, a determination for the final impact of the whole presentation needs to be identified.

Contrast index (CI)
A measure of contrast used in processing to determine the correct grade of paper to use to print a negative with a full tonal range using a diffuser enlarger.

CONTRAST INDEX As you know, "contrast" means the range of densities produced by a combination of subject luminance ratio and the amount of development.

Contrast masks are extremely useful for making adjustments to a specific range of tones without affecting others.

With the Contrast layer selected, the Channel Mixer is launched by choosing Image/Adjustments/Channel Mixer. The Channel Mixer (see Figure 9) adjusts the layer by mixing the detail from the three color channels.

Contrast
Contrast in an image is determined by the difference between light and dark tones in a scene. If there is not enough contrast a picture may appear too gray or dull.

Contrast Tips for Black-and-white Photography
When you first look at an image, whether it's a painting, charcoal sketch or photograph, notice how your eyes focus directly on the point of greatest contrast.

When trying to emphasize a subject, it is best not to photograph it against a cluttered background. Compare a photo of someone taken at an amusement park, with dozens of people in the background, with a portrait.

Very interesting results can be obtained by printing through negative and positive renditions of an image in register.150 The densities and contrasts of the negative and positive are important.

USING CONTRAST FILTERS
Single-coloured contrast filters can be used on your DSLR to give better monochrome shots, but you may have to set the camera to black & white. You may also have to shoot JPEGs depending on your camera.

print contrast

Global Contrast: The range between the lightest and darkest portions of your image and the distribution of contrast through the tonal range to accentuate the most important elements within the photo.

Colour Contrast Check
Colour Contrast Check lets you pick a foreground and a background color and see if they provide enough of a contrast when someone who has color deficits views it, or when it's viewed on a black and white screen.

Contrast values - perceived difference between the light areas (highlights) and the dark areas (shadows) of a scene. The range of contrast levels between the highlights and the shadows is called Contrast Values.

In contrast to using fast shutter speeds to freeze action, using long exposures is a very creative means to convey motion in a photograph. A blurred image can be a very impressionistic rendition of movement, giving the viewer a sense of sensation.

In contrast, anti-aliasing refers to more refined edges in an image. The process of anti-aliasing calls for an exchange of colors within a pixel at the edge of the figure to smooth the pixels' squareness.

In contrast to RGB or CMYK, Lab is not dependent upon the various input and output devices. For that reason, it is used as an exchange format between devices. Lab is also the internal color model of PostScript Level II.

The contrast within the picture and a silhouetted main subject against its background is important. But the tonal values of black-and-white pictures are not only dependent on the brightness of the surface colors, but also on the lighting.
